Permanent magnet synchronous motors (high torque / high speed), LV and MV up to 15 kV
Permanent magnet synchronous motors are built in two variants. Low-speed High Torque motors deliver torque up to 4000 kN·m, while high-speed High Speed motors reach speeds up to 20,000 rpm. Voltage is up to 15 kV, supplied from a frequency converter.

Description
These are electrical machines with permanent magnets. Powerful magnets give the highest efficiency in a compact and lightweight design. Compared with induction and classic synchronous machines there are practically no rotor losses, so the rotor stays cool and the inverter currents are lower. There are no slip rings and no rotor cooling, which simplifies the design.
The design department adapts the machine to the customer's task in two main variants. High Torque machines are low-speed machines with a very high force density (torque density). They make it possible to dispense with a gearbox or reduce the number of its stages; torque is up to 4000 kN·m. High Speed machines are high-speed machines with a very high power density and speeds up to 20,000 rpm.
Force density is higher and losses are lower than in an induction machine, so a magnet motor is usually smaller in size or gives more power from the same frame size. A smaller rotor has a markedly lower moment of inertia, which is an advantage in dynamic applications, for example on test benches. The machines perform well in the field weakening range.
Voltage is up to 15 kV: the motors are built in low-voltage and medium-voltage versions for operation from a frequency converter, in all standard types of protection and cooling, including for gas hazardous areas zones 1 and 2. The manufacturer meets the requirements of the standards and classification societies IEC, EN, VDE/DIN, ABS, API, ANSI, BV, DNV, GOST and LRS. Fields of application include gearless drives for mills, conveyors and rolling mills, propulsion systems, compressors and pumps, test benches, oil and gas, chemicals and shipbuilding. The generator application of the technology is covered in a separate item.
Selection requires the torque and speed of the driven machine, the converter type and the ambient conditions. The design department agrees the frame size, cooling method and protection with these data. In gearless drives a low-speed motor with high torque density replaces the motor-plus-gearbox combination, which simplifies the drive line and reduces the number of units to maintain. Supply from a frequency converter is mandatory, because direct-on-line starting of such a machine is not provided for.
