Description
The main circulation pump (MCP) motor drives the pump that moves coolant through the primary circuit of the reactor. It is a large vertical high-voltage induction machine. It is subject to heightened requirements for reliability, seismic resistance, flywheel inertia (for pump coast-down on loss of power) and quality of manufacture to nuclear codes.
The manufacturer produces MCP motors for CPR1000 reactors and for the HPR1000 Hualong-1 design. The Hualong-1 MCP motor passed type tests on 19 September 2018. Type tests confirm the design as a type, not an individual unit. The manufacturer's website shows the machining of a motor rotor for CPR1000. For the AP1000 design a prototype circulation pump motor has been developed.
The business is not limited to motors. The manufacturer has mastered high-power main pumps, for which hot tests were successfully carried out, and canned-motor pumps for floating small reactors. Main helium blowers and helium compressors have been developed for high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. MCPs and canned-motor pumps are supplied as the manufacturer's own product alongside the motors.
MCP motors are produced within the electric motors and special machines business. It combines about 180 series of motors rated up to 120 MW. Individual motors of different designs may differ markedly in rating and rotational speed. Rated characteristics of specific MCP motors (power, voltage, rotational speed) are not given in the available materials, so they are clarified with the manufacturer for each reactor design. Manufacturing is in Deyang (Sichuan, China).
The MCP motor runs continuously for the whole time the reactor operates, so bearing life and the lubrication and winding cooling systems are important for it. The type of cooling, the insulation class and the bearing assembly are given in the technical proposal for a specific project, not in a general catalogue. The manufacturer has been developing canned (shielded) pumps for more than 20 years. There are nuclear, non-nuclear and chemical versions for nuclear power, petrochemicals, coal and gas chemistry and new energy, where the medium must be pumped without leaks. For the MCP motor, flywheel inertia is needed so that after the power is cut off the coolant continues for some time to pass through the core.
