Description
MS series motors are designed for the specific application on the basis of a flexible modular structure and automated design, and they are not built for stock. Synchronous machines are the preferred choice for large compressors and vertical pumps, and are also widely used in wind tunnel fans and in drives with cycloconverters. The largest high-voltage motor built by the manufacturer is rated 60 MW.
The MS series rating is 1000–45 000 kW (the brochure gives a general range of 150–60 000 kW for synchronous motors), the voltage is up to 15 kV, the weight is 1.5–160 t, and the number of poles is 2–36. The shaft height is 450–1120 mm (up to 1320 mm) and the frame sizes are 10–13. Cooling is IC01/06, IC81W, IC611, IC616, IC86W, IC31, and the degree of protection is IP23, IP24, IP44. Mounting is horizontal or vertical.
Depending on speed and size, the rotor is salient-pole or cylindrical. The machines are calculated with thermo-hydrodynamic, strength, electromagnetic and rotor-dynamic analysis. This makes special versions possible, for example motors with built-in access ladders for maintenance at refineries. Insulation is the MICASYSTEM® VPI system on mica tape and epoxy resins.
Examples of supply: a 45 MW, 3000 rpm motor for a centrifugal compressor at an LNG plant; an 18-pole motor weighing 83 t for the largest reciprocating compressor at a refinery. For this compressor, a national oil company in the Middle East ordered six MSCR 13Y18 motors of 16.6 MW, 11 kV, 333 rpm each, and later seven more MSCR motors. For centrifugal compressors in the aggressive environment of a refinery in Oman, four motors of 17.5 MW each were supplied together with transformers, switchgear and motor protection panels. Theoretical and practical training was provided for the customer's personnel at the manufacturer's site.
The motors operate from the network with soft starting or from frequency converters, including the Silcovert S LCI, and meet the requirements of Shell DEP and API. Applications are LNG and gas pipeline compressors, reciprocating and centrifugal compressors at refineries, large pumps, wind tunnel fans and metallurgical drives.
