MEBSSL / MEBSSW / MEBSSD — modular wound-rotor induction motors up to 20 MW, 230 V – 13.8 kV

MEBSSL, MEBSSW and MEBSSD are modular series of wound-rotor induction motors rated up to 20 MW and from 230 V to 13.8 kV. The series differ in cooling (air-to-air, air-to-water, open ventilation). They are used in drives of mills, crushers, shredders and fans.

Description

MEBSSL, MEBSSW and MEBSSD are modular series of three-phase wound-rotor induction motors for low, medium and high voltage. Slip-ring motors are chosen when a high starting torque is needed with a low starting current and without power electronics. They are fitted in drives of mills, crushers, shredders, refiners and fans with a large moment of inertia, and also in networks with unstable voltage. The series work in the cement, paper, water and steel industries.

The electrical part of all three series is the same, and the cooling systems differ. MEBSSL is built with an air-to-air heat exchanger (IC611, IC616, IC666), degree of protection IP55 (optionally IP65), frame sizes 100–1000. Such motors dominate in the cement industry because they need neither cooling water nor a particularly clean environment. MEBSSW is built with an air-to-water heat exchanger IC81W, IP55 or IP65, frame sizes 355–1000, and it is more compact and quieter. MEBSSD has open design IC01 with degree of protection IP23, IPW24 or WBII, frame sizes 355–1000, and is used, among other things, for large mill drives. Other degrees of protection are supplied on request.

Common parameters: voltage from 230 V to 13,800 V, output up to 20 MW, welded steel frame with integrated bearing plates, terminal boxes on the right or left turning through 4 × 90°, mounting arrangements IM B3 and IM V1. Insulation is class F (optionally H), with temperature rise to class B or F. For 60 Hz the standard voltages are 4160, 6600, 7200 and 13,800 V. The motors have an internal slip-ring chamber separated from the machine, which simplifies maintenance and allows a bearing to be replaced without removing the rings.

To order, the motors are fitted with the manufacturer's own modular rotor short-circuiting and brush lifting device (KBAV). After run-up the rotor winding is short-circuited and the brushes are lifted, which practically eliminates wear of brushes and rings. The rings are made of stainless steel, and the short-circuiting unit of silver-plated copper. This device is usually used on motors of frame size 630 and above. The motors are tested on the manufacturer's test field. For mills, crushers and fans the series are considered as a replacement for high-voltage wound-rotor motors АКН, АКЗ, ДАФ, МАФ; selection is made by purpose and main parameters, and finally with the manager.

Questions and answers

How do the MEBSSL, MEBSSW and MEBSSD series differ?

The electrical part is the same, and the cooling differs. MEBSSL has an air-to-air heat exchanger IC611/616/666, MEBSSW air-to-water IC81W, and MEBSSD open ventilation IC01.

What voltage and output range do these motors have?

Voltage from 230 V to 13,800 V, output up to 20 MW. Frame sizes are 100–1000 for MEBSSL and 355–1000 for MEBSSW and MEBSSD.

What is the KBAV device for?

After run-up it short-circuits the rotor winding and lifts the brushes, which practically eliminates wear of brushes and rings. It is usually used on motors of frame size 630 and above.
