M Mining — induction motors for the mining and cement industries, 250–10 000 kW, up to 13.8 kV, IP66
M Mining is a range of three-phase induction motors rated 250–10 000 kW and 220–13 800 V for the mining and cement industries. The enclosure, with a degree of protection up to IP66, withstands dust, sun, powerful water jets and the constant settling of ore and cement particles. For wound-rotor machines the manufacturer has developed a new brush gear with a built-in control system.

Description
The motors are installed on mills (roller, ball, rod, SAG), crushers, fans and exhausters, belt conveyors, loaders and winches, centrifugal pumps, rotary kilns and electric excavators. The range is built in IEC frame sizes 355–1000 for 50 and 60 Hz according to IEC or NEMA standards. Squirrel-cage machines have from 2 to 14 poles, wound-rotor machines from 4 to 14. The electromechanical characteristics and the strength of the construction are designed for continuous operation without stops in a heavy dusty environment.
The degree of protection depends on the type of bearings. With sleeve bearings the motor is built to IP55 or IP56, with rolling bearings from IP55 to IP66. For IP66 all joints and bearing assemblies have special seals that keep out contamination capable of seriously damaging the machine. Screws, nuts, washers and other fasteners are made of stainless steel to avoid corrosion. The manufacturer's paint system withstands 240 hours in a salt spray chamber according to ASTM B117, so the motor can work in abrasive and humid environments with SO2 present.
Wound-rotor motors are available with a fixed or a lifting brush holder. All brushes face the inspection window, which gives full access during replacement, and constant-pressure springs reduce wear. The slip-ring compartment has large inspection windows. The fixed brush holder is cooled separately from the motor, which improves its cooling efficiency, and the ventilation circuit contains a filter against brush dust. The insulators have been repositioned so that less dust accumulates, and the insulators and brush holders can be adjusted in the axial direction. The brush holder design can also be made in a mirrored version.
The brush lifting mechanism has been simplified and the number of parts and assemblies noticeably reduced; the lifting drive uses gearboxes and inductive sensors. As a result, maintenance takes less time. The developers set the goal of making the system robust and simple to implement. A control system for brush lifting with its own logic is built into the motor, and it needs only 2 input and 3 output signals for connection. Through the built-in operator panel the system shows the status, detects faults and blocks erroneous operations of the brush gear and the main drive, so personnel work more safely.
