Description
Low-speed synchronous motors and generators are machines with a salient-pole rotor and a large number of poles, which can be started directly from the grid. The main field of application is the drive of reciprocating compressors and other machinery of the petrochemical and gas industries, where a synchronous motor gives constant speed, high efficiency and reactive power compensation.
Direct starting of a large synchronous machine places a significant load on the grid. The manufacturer's calculation tools make it possible to check the behavior of the whole system during starting and limit the effect on the grid, with additional devices such as a transformer or reactors if needed. The rotors have an automatic synchronization device. After asynchronous acceleration on the starting winding, excitation is applied at the right moment and the motor pulls into synchronism. After that it runs at a constant speed that does not depend on the load.
Like the whole range of the manufacturer's synchronous machines, the motors are made with global impregnation of the stator windings under vacuum and pressure and with brushless excitation. For large machines, impregnation in sections or by bars is possible. Cooling is by air or water coolers or open air. Excitation regulators SARN, HYDRALTA NG and GLOBALTA NG, as well as protection and control systems, can be supplied with the motors. The specific power range is not given in open sources. For compressor and petrochemical drives the motor is designed for the parameters of the specific installation, so the voltage and speed are agreed with the customer at the design stage. A low-speed motor with a large number of poles is well suited to a gearless drive of a reciprocating compressor.
Alongside low-speed machines, the manufacturer offers two-pole motors rated from 4 to 40 MW for variable-speed drives up to 8000 rpm. The design is adapted in each case to the electrical and mechanical requirements of the customer. The production base is four specialized plants in France (the main site, Champagne-sur-Seine, Carquefou, Étupes) and a plant in India (Vadodara). The main site has a 5.4 m impregnation tank, 55 overhead cranes, four test platforms and four balancing benches.

Questions and answers
Can the motor be started directly from the grid?
Yes, direct starting from the grid is possible. If needed, the effect on the grid is limited with a transformer or reactors.
How does the motor pull into synchronism?
After asynchronous acceleration on the starting winding, excitation is applied, and a device on the rotor performs automatic synchronization with the grid.
Which machines are the low-speed motors intended for?
For driving reciprocating compressors and other machinery of the petrochemical and gas industries.
Similar equipment from other manufacturers
