Low-speed high-voltage direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous motors 6–10 kV, 355–3000 kW, 0–200 rpm
Low-speed direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous motors have a rating of 355–3000 kW at 6–10 kV and a speed of 0–200 rpm. They replace the combination of an induction motor and a gearbox on machines with high torque and low speed. Typical loads include belt and scraper conveyors, mills, mixers and mine hoists.

Description
The motor is coupled directly to the driven machine, and the gearbox disappears from the drive. According to the manufacturer, the kinematic scheme becomes simpler, the space for the drive is reduced and overall energy efficiency increases. The efficiency of the motor itself corresponds to class IE4 and higher, and the manufacturer estimates the overall energy saving compared with a traditional drive at more than 30 %. Starting at low frequency with high torque gives a starting torque of up to 2.5 times the rated one, so a conveyor or mill sets off under full load.
The main parameters are power 355–3000 kW, speed 0–200 rpm, voltage 6000–10 000 V, shaft height H560–1120. The motor is supplied from a frequency converter of 5–150 Hz and works only from a VFD, which performs a soft start with full torque from zero speed and regulates the speed. Cooling is water-based by scheme IC37W or IC46W, so the enclosed frame withstands high power density. Degree of protection is up to IP66, bearings are rolling, mounting arrangements IMB3, IMB35 and IMV1.
For mines and explosive plants an Ex db flameproof enclosure is provided. The motors are made to GB and IEC, with CCC and MA certificates, the second of which concerns mining equipment in China. Standard installation altitude is up to 1000 m, and up to 5000 m above sea level on request.
The family includes related machines for underground mining. Integrated PMSMs with a built-in VFD and gearbox at 1140 V have a rating of 250–800 kW and about 60 rpm. Another series at 1140–3300 V covers 200–1600 kW at 1500 rpm and is intended for scraper and belt conveyors and pumping stations. Drum motor rollers with permanent magnets at 660/1140 V are made with a rating of 75–315 kW.
For mining and processing works, coal mines and cement plants the item becomes a gearless alternative to the drives of belt conveyors and mills. The gearbox in such drives requires oil, gear mesh monitoring and periodic repair, so without it the list of components to maintain gets shorter. Before replacement the torque on the shaft of the driven machine is checked, because it determines the size of the low-speed motor.

Questions and answers
What speed and power do the direct-drive motors have?
Power is 355–3000 kW, speed 0–200 rpm, voltage 6000–10 000 V. The supply is from a VFD with a frequency of 5–150 Hz.
Can these motors be used in coal mines?
Yes, a flameproof Ex db version is provided, and the motors hold CCC and MA certificates. Degree of protection is up to IP66.
What starting torque is available under heavy load?
According to the manufacturer, a start at low frequency gives a starting torque of up to 2.5 times the rated one. A conveyor or mill sets off under full load without a gearbox.
