Large low-speed high-voltage induction motors, 3–13.8 kV, 200–8000 kW, shaft height 800–1600
Large low-speed high-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors rated 200–8000 kW at 3–13.8 kV. The line covers the largest frame sizes of the plant, with shaft height from 800 to 1600. The motors are coupled directly to pumps, mills and fans, without a gearbox.

Description
In the product list the line is called BIG HV MOTORS, and in the specification table LOW SPEED HIGH VOLTAGE MOTORS. The plant's standard high-voltage programme covers shaft heights 355–800, and these machines extend the range to 1600.
The voltage is 3–13.8 kV, including 6 and 10 kV, and the frequency is 50 or 60 Hz. The number of poles is from 4 to 12, which means a synchronous speed from 1500 to 500 rpm at 50 Hz. A large frame at moderate speed is needed to obtain high shaft torque when the motor is coupled directly to the driven machine. Class F insulation is used with temperature rise to class B, mounting arrangements are IM B3, B5 and V1. General requirements comply with IEC 60034-1, and connection dimensions follow IEC 60072.
For this section the manufacturer gives cooling IC 511, IC 516, IC 611, IC 616 and IC 666. These are tubular and heat-exchanger air-to-air schemes with shaft-mounted or independent fans, so the motor can also be used with frequency control. The specification table, however, gives IC 411 and IP55 and does not state the series designation. The final design for cooling and protection is therefore clarified with the manufacturer for a specific project.
Typical drives are large pumps (circulating pumps of power plants, pumps of irrigation systems and water intakes), mills and crushers of mining and processing plants and cement works, large fans and flue gas exhausters, and machinery of metallurgical production. A low-speed high-power induction motor is often installed instead of a synchronous motor or a combination of a high-speed motor and a gearbox. An induction machine is simpler to start and does not need an excitation system.
When such a motor is installed in place of a machine already operating at the site, foundation dimensions, the bearing design (pedestal or end-shield) and the cooling system are checked. These determine whether the foundation and air ducts can be kept without rework.

Questions and answers
What speeds do the low-speed motors have?
The number of poles is from 4 to 12, and the synchronous speed is from 1500 to 500 rpm at 50 Hz. The motors are coupled to the driven machine without a gearbox.
Which machines are these motors suitable for?
Large circulating pumps of power plants, pumps of irrigation systems and water intakes, mills and crushers of mining and processing plants and cement works, fans and flue gas exhausters. Power is from 200 to 8000 kW.
What is checked when an old motor is replaced?
Foundation dimensions, the bearing design (pedestal or end-shield) and the cooling system. The connection dimensions of the motor comply with IEC 60072.
