KV — modular high-voltage motors with air-to-air cooling (IC611) 2.3–15 kV, 160–17 000 kW

KV is a modular series of high-voltage three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors with IC611 air-to-air heat exchanger cooling. Power 160–17 000 kW, shaft height 400–1200 mm, voltage 2.3–15 kV. The series is supplied in general-industrial and explosion-protected versions.

Description

The KV series is built on a modular principle (in German, Baukasten): cooling systems, degrees of protection and types of explosion protection are combined on a common base. The motors are built at a plant in Mönchengladbach (Germany), which has belonged to an international industrial group since 2011. The same modular program includes the KU series with air-to-water cooling and the open KB/KF series of IP23, which are listed as separate items.

Shaft height 400–1200 mm, power 160–17 000 kW, number of poles 2–24. Steel frame, rolling or sleeve bearings, mounting arrangements B3 and V1. Degree of protection IP55 or IP65. Insulation class 155 (F) with use at class 130 (B). Supply from the mains or a frequency converter.

The version for safe areas is rated for 2.3–15 kV and carries the CE marking. The explosion-protected KV version for 3–15 kV is ATEX (IECEx) certified with protection types II 3G Ex ec IIC T3/T4 Gc for Zone 2, as well as II 2G Ex eb IIC T3/T4 Gb and II 2G Ex pxb IIC T3/T4 Gb for Zone 1. The last type means pressurization with overpressure.

IC611 cooling is closed: the internal circuit is separated from the surrounding air and cooled by an air-to-air heat exchanger. Therefore no cooling water is needed. The motors are used for large pumps, compressors, fans and mills in power generation, the oil and gas, chemical and metallurgical industries, and water management. When selecting, specify the power, voltage, number of poles, zone and type of explosion protection, and mounting arrangement.

Mounting arrangement B3 means a horizontal foot-mounted motor, V1 a vertical flange-mounted motor with the flange down. Class 155 (F) with use at class 130 (B) means the insulation is rated for a higher temperature than the motor reaches in operation. The frame is steel; in the ribbed KA5, KE2 and KD2 series it is cast iron. The voltage in the version for safe areas starts from 2.3 kV, and in the explosion-protected version from 3 kV.

Questions and answers

What are the power and voltage of KV motors?

Power 160–17 000 kW. Voltage 2.3–15 kV in the version for safe areas and 3–15 kV in the explosion-protected version.

What types of explosion protection does the explosion-protected KV series have?

II 3G Ex ec IIC T3/T4 Gc for Zone 2, as well as II 2G Ex eb IIC T3/T4 Gb and II 2G Ex pxb IIC T3/T4 Gb for Zone 1. ATEX (IECEx) certification.

Is cooling water needed for KV?

No, IC611 cooling is closed, through an air-to-air heat exchanger. A water-cooled variant exists in the separate KU series with air-to-water cooling.
