KU — modular high-voltage motors with air-to-water cooling (IC81W) for explosive atmospheres 3–15 kV, up to 17 000 kW

KU is a modular series of high-voltage three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors rated 160–17 000 kW for 3–15 kV. Cooling through an IC81W air-to-water heat exchanger, versions for explosive atmospheres with ATEX (IECEx) certification. The motors are used at process plants in the oil and gas and chemical industries.

Description

KU motors are built in Mönchengladbach (Germany) as a modular series with a steel frame. The plant has belonged to an international group since 2011. Shaft height is 400–1200 mm, number of poles 2–24, power 160–17 000 kW. Heat from the internal circuit is removed by an air-to-water heat exchanger in the IC81W scheme. From the same frame size more power can be taken, the noise is lower, and clean ambient air is not required. At oil and gas and chemical plants, where the air can be polluted, this property matters.

The supply comes from the mains or a frequency converter, voltage 3–15 kV. Rolling or sleeve bearings are chosen for the specific machine. Mounting arrangements B3 and V1, degree of protection IP55 or IP65. Insulation is class 155 (F) with use at class 130 (B).

For explosive atmospheres the motors are ATEX (IECEx) certified. In Zone 2 the protection type II 3G Ex ec IIC T3/T4 Gc is used. In Zone 1, II 2G Ex eb IIC T3/T4 Gb and II 2G Ex pxb IIC T3/T4 Gb are provided, where pxb means pressurization with overpressure. The different protection types make it possible to select a version for the zone class and temperature class T3 or T4 at a particular site.

An example of a built machine is KU6536G-PA04, 3000 kW, 6000 V, 330 A, 1491 rpm, marked II 3G Ex ec db eb ib IIC T3 Gc.

The series belongs to a modular program together with two others. KV is cooled by the IC611 air-to-air scheme, has a voltage of 2.3–15 kV, power of 160–17 000 kW and shaft height of 400–1200 mm, and its explosion protection is the same as for KU (ATEX, IECEx). The open KB/KF carry only the CE marking. The open KB/KF motors have degree of protection IP23 and IC01 ventilation. All series of the program have insulation of class 155 (F) with use at class 130 (B). The choice between them depends on air cleanliness, zone requirements and the cooling method.

Questions and answers

For which explosive atmospheres are KU motors intended?

For Zone 2, the II 3G Ex ec IIC T3/T4 Gc version is provided. For Zone 1 there are II 2G Ex eb IIC T3/T4 Gb and II 2G Ex pxb IIC T3/T4 Gb with pressurization with overpressure. ATEX (IECEx) certification.

What power and voltage range does the KU series have?

Power is 160–17 000 kW, voltage 3–15 kV when supplied from the mains or a frequency converter. Shaft height 400–1200 mm, number of poles 2–24.

How does KU differ from the open KB/KF version?

KU is cooled through an IC81W air-to-water heat exchanger and has degree of protection IP55 or IP65, so clean ambient air is not required. The open KB/KF series has IP23 and IC01 ventilation.
