KA5 — high-voltage induction motors with ribbed frame 3–11 kV, 355–2240 kW

KA5 is a series of high-voltage three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors in a ribbed cast-iron frame with IC411 self-ventilation. Output 355–2240 kW, voltage 3–11 kV, shaft height 400–560 mm. The series is intended for safe areas and can be supplied from the mains or from a frequency converter.

Description

KA5 motors are built by the plant in Mönchengladbach (Germany), which has been part of an international industrial group since 2011. The ribbed cast-iron frame is cooled by IC411 self-ventilation, so neither heat exchangers nor cooling water are needed. This is a design for safe (non-explosive) areas, that is, general industrial. The motors carry the CE mark.

The parameters of the series are as follows. Shaft height 400–560 mm, output 355–2240 kW, voltage 3–11 kV, number of poles 2–12. Rolling bearings. Mounting arrangements B3, B35, B5 and V1. Degree of protection IP55, IP56, IP65 or IP66. Insulation is thermal class 155 (F) with temperature rise to class 130 (B), which gives a thermal reserve. The voltage is supplied by the mains or a frequency converter, without any redesign.

Ribbed self-ventilated motors are easy to maintain and suit pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors of medium output. The manufacturer focuses on the oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical industries, power engineering, water utilities, shipbuilding, metallurgy, test stands and tunnel applications. Installation, commissioning, repair and diagnostics of the motors are carried out by the manufacturer's service department.

For explosive areas the same programme includes the separate series KE2, KD2 and KR, and for large outputs with closed cooling the KV series. The quality system of the production is certified to ISO 9001 and the environmental management system to ISO 14001, both certificates issued by DQS.

The mounting arrangements read as follows. B3 means a horizontal foot-mounted motor, B5 flange-mounted, B35 foot-mounted with a flange, and V1 vertical with the flange down. Class 155 (F) with temperature rise to class 130 (B) means that the insulation is rated for a higher temperature than the motor heating permits in operation. Cooling IC411 means that air is blown over the frame ribs by a fan on the motor shaft, so a separate fan drive is not needed. For comparison, the KE2 series has a shaft height of 315–500 mm, and the KD2 series 355–500 mm. When selecting, the output, voltage, number of poles, degree of protection and mounting arrangement must be specified.

Questions and answers

What output and voltage do KA5 motors have?

Output 355–2240 kW, voltage 3–11 kV. Supply is possible from the mains or from a frequency converter.

What cooling and degree of protection does the series have?

Cooling IC411, that is self-ventilation through a ribbed cast-iron frame, without heat exchangers and cooling water. Degree of protection IP55, IP56, IP65 or IP66.

Can KA5 be installed in explosive areas?

No, the series is intended for safe areas and carries the CE mark. For explosive areas the manufacturer builds separate series, for example KE2 and KD2.
