IC 511 — squirrel-cage induction motors with tubular cooling up to 4000 kW, 380 V – 13.8 kV

Squirrel-cage motors with IC 511 tubular cooling are enclosed induction machines for voltages from 380 V to 13,800 V and output up to 4000 kW. Frame sizes 500–1000, welded steel frame, degree of protection IP55. They are used to replace installed motors of this design and where it remains the preferred one.

Description

Squirrel-cage motors with IC 511 tubular cooling are a series of three-phase induction machines for low, medium and high voltage in enclosed design. The layout with cooling tubes was for a long time a common standard for high-voltage motors. On the market it has gradually been displaced by the IC411 and IC611 arrangements, but the manufacturer continues to build IC511 motors. For a number of industrial applications they remain the preferred choice, and they are also needed to replace installed machines of this design.

In the IC511 motor the cooling tubes are arranged symmetrically around the stator core. The primary and secondary coolants (air) are moved by shaft-mounted fans. The direct flow of external air through smooth tubes cleans them by itself, so the cooling system is little prone to clogging, and the arrangement allows a low height and a reduced length of the machine. The short length makes the motor more resistant to vibration, and the low height is convenient when the machine is installed under another mechanism. The frame is made of welded steel that is rigid in torsion, so the motor withstands shock loads and vibration. The smooth surface protects against falling material and makes cleaning easier, and large rolling bearings withstand high loads and last long.

Main parameters: voltage from 380 V to 13,800 V, output up to 4000 kW, frame sizes 500–1000, mounting arrangements B3 and V1, degree of protection IP55. The terminal box is possible in any position. Insulation is class F with temperature rise to class B. The motors are intended for supply from the mains and from a frequency converter.

The motors are built to IEC/EN 60034, VDE, DIN and ISO and are tested on the manufacturer's own test field in Hennigsdorf. IC511 machines are no longer standard in Europe, so it is hard for an operator to find a replacement for old motors of this design, and rebuilding foundations and connections is often impossible. The manufacturer specialises in motors to individual requirements in small series, including exact mechanical and electrical copies of discontinued machines of other makers that keep the foundation and connections unchanged.

Questions and answers

Why are IC 511 motors still built if they have been displaced by the IC411 and IC611 arrangements?

For a number of industrial applications tubular cooling remains the preferred choice, and it is also needed to replace installed machines of this design. Rebuilding foundations and connections for a standard motor is often impossible.

What voltage and output range do IC 511 motors have?

Voltage from 380 V to 13,800 V, output up to 4000 kW, frame sizes 500–1000, degree of protection IP55.

Can IC 511 motors be supplied from a frequency converter?

Yes, the motors are intended for supply both from the mains and from a frequency converter. Mounting arrangements are B3 and V1, insulation is class F with temperature rise to class B.
