High-voltage synchronous motors up to 13.8 kV, up to 30 MW, 100–1500 rpm

High-voltage synchronous motors with output up to 30 MW and voltage up to 13.8 kV, speed 100–1500 rpm. They hold constant speed under any load and compensate the reactive power of the grid. Used in large drives in metallurgy, nuclear power and mining.

Description

A synchronous motor works as follows: the rotor follows the rotating magnetic field of the stator, so the speed stays constant regardless of load. Compared with asynchronous machines it has higher efficiency, regulates speed and power more precisely, and can also compensate reactive power in the grid. That is why such motors are installed in large industrial drives and power systems where stable speed is needed. The series covers output up to 30 MW, voltage up to 13.8 kV and speed 100–1500 rpm.

The motors are designed individually. The manufacturer performs a precise electrical calculation and adapts the mechanical part to the driven machine. The machines come in horizontal and vertical versions, with rolling or sliding bearings. The cooling method is chosen from all known ones, and the protection degree covers the range IP21–IP66. The rotor is made cylindrical or salient-pole, squirrel-cage or with permanent magnets.

The manufacturer has supplied more than six thousand motors, mainly for heavy industry. In metallurgy these are drives of rolling mills, heavy presses and ventilation systems. In nuclear power the motors drive cooling pumps, ventilation and backup systems, and since 2022 the manufacturer has also produced machines for nuclear plants. In mining they are installed on drilling rigs, mine transport, conveyors and crushing and grinding equipment. Separate areas are marine drives, traction and cable cars.

For selection, the grid parameters, the output and speed of the driven machine, the nature of the load and the installation conditions are needed. From these data the manufacturer agrees the rotor version, cooling method and protection degree. A synchronous machine wins where the motor runs for a long time at an even load and the grid needs reactive power compensation, since rotor excitation allows the power factor to be regulated. For frequent starts with high torque, when speed stability is not needed, asynchronous motors are usually considered.

Installation and maintenance depend on the version. Vertical machines require a calculation of the axial load on the bearing, and with sliding bearings a lubrication system is provided. The excitation of a synchronous motor is fed from a separate source, and this must be taken into account in the power supply design and in the starting scheme.
