High-voltage induction motors for nuclear power plants, 3–13.8 kV, 200–8000 kW

High-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors for nuclear power plants, rated from 200 to 8000 kW at 3–13.8 kV. This is a separate line within the plant's high-voltage programme, and the plant regards supply to nuclear and thermal power plants as one of its traditional specialisations. The motors drive auxiliary pumps and fans of power units.

Description

Alongside nuclear and thermal power generation, the plant traditionally serves mining, metallurgy and the oil and gas industry, yet the motors for nuclear power plants are singled out as a separate line. The range is designed for voltages from 3 to 13.8 kV, including the common 6 and 10 kV, and a supply frequency of 50 or 60 Hz. The rotor is of squirrel-cage type, so the motor has no slip rings or brushes.

The frame size range is wide. Shaft height varies from 355 to 1600 and the number of poles from 2 to 26. At one end of the range are high-speed 3000 rpm motors for pumps and fans, at the other low-speed machines for large circulating pumps, running at about 230 rpm at 50 Hz. Class F insulation is used with temperature rise to class B. This thermal margin extends winding life, which matters for a power unit with a long service life.

Mounting arrangements are IM B3, B5 and V1, with the vertical V1 used for vertical pump drives. General technical requirements comply with IEC 60034-1, and connection dimensions follow IEC 60072.

As for cooling, the published data differ. The heading of the nuclear power plant motor section states IC 611 with an air-to-air heat exchanger and IC 81W with an air-to-water cooler. The specification table gives IC 411 and degree of protection IP55, and does not state the series designation. The final cooling and protection scheme, as well as qualification for seismic resistance, safety class and the nuclear regulations of the country of operation, are therefore confirmed by manufacturer documents when ordering.

At nuclear power plants such motors drive main circulating and service water pumps, make-up and emergency cooling pumps, feed and condensate pumps of the turbine hall, and fans of ventilation systems and cooling towers. The line is also considered as a replacement for high-voltage auxiliary motors supplied to power units by plants of the former USSR. There is one condition: the motor must pass the required qualification for the specific unit.

Questions and answers

What voltage and power are the nuclear power plant motors available in?

The motors are rated from 200 to 8000 kW at voltages from 3 to 13.8 kV, including 6 and 10 kV. The supply frequency is 50 or 60 Hz.

What speeds does the line cover?

The number of poles ranges from 2 to 26. This gives speeds from 3000 rpm for pumps and fans to about 230 rpm for large circulating pumps at 50 Hz.

What cooling and degree of protection do the motors have?

The section heading specifies IC 611 and IC 81W cooling, while the specification table gives IC 411 and IP55. The final design, seismic resistance and safety class for nuclear power plants are confirmed by manufacturer documents.
