High-voltage wound-rotor induction motors 3–13.8 kV, 200–9000 kW

The company’s plant in Subotica produces high-voltage wound-rotor induction motors with slip rings for 3–13.8 kV and 200–9000 kW. They serve heavy-start and adjustable-speed machinery, for example ball mills, crushers, high-power fans, compressors and hoisting machines. Another niche covers networks where large starting currents are unacceptable.

Description

A starting rheostat or a control device in the rotor circuit gives a high starting torque at limited current. This is how machines with a large moment of inertia are accelerated smoothly, and the network voltage does not sag during start-up. The resistance in the rotor circuit is gradually cut out as the machine accelerates, after which the rings are short-circuited and the motor runs as an ordinary induction machine. For a ball mill with a heavy charge, such a start is also gentler on the mechanics, because the torque builds up in a controlled way.

The item covers four series that differ in cooling. The drip-proof 1.PO(F) has IC01 cooling and degree of protection IP23, power 200–9000 kW. The series with an air-to-air cooler 1.PZ(F) (IC611) and ZP(F)N (IC511) are made with degree of protection IP54 and power 200–8000 kW. The series 1.PV(F) with an air-to-water cooler IC81W (IP54) again covers 200–9000 kW. The choice between an air and a water cooler depends on the availability of process water and the temperature in the shop.

The common parameters are voltage 3–13.8 kV, frequency 50 or 60 Hz, shaft height 355–800, from 2 to 12 poles, insulation class F, and mounting arrangements IM B3 and IM V1. The motors are made to IEC 60034-1, and the mounting dimensions comply with IEC 60072. The drip-proof version is simpler but needs clean, dry air in the room, while the closed series with coolers are installed in dusty shops.

The wound rotor remains in demand in metallurgy, mining and cement industries and at concentrating plants, where a large number of mill and crusher motors have historically been built on exactly this scheme. Motors of this type are also used in drives with a static Scherbius cascade, and where limited speed control is needed. Replacement with the same type of wound-rotor motor keeps the existing starting equipment and rotor cable lines, so it is considered alongside a switch to a squirrel-cage motor with a VFD.

When replacing an old wound-rotor motor, the rotor voltage and current are checked, because they determine whether the existing starting rheostat or control station will fit. The shaft height, number of poles and cooling method are also checked.
