Description
Induction motors for direct line operation are designed for heavy duty, primarily in metallurgy and heavy engineering. The manufacturer stresses the robust design, durability and ease of operation. Compared with synchronous machines they cost less initially, are simpler to maintain and start without complex control systems. That is why they are often chosen for a wide range of industrial tasks.
Series parameters: output up to 14 MW, voltage up to 11 kV, speed 200–1800 rpm. The rotor is squirrel-cage. The motors are made in horizontal or vertical versions, with rolling or sliding bearings, with any cooling method and protection degree IP21–IP66. The weight depends on output and purpose and ranges from hundreds of kilograms to several tonnes. The specific version is selected by the manufacturer for the project and the driven machine.
In metallurgy the motors drive rolling mills, presses and ventilation systems. At nuclear power plants they drive cooling pumps, ventilation and emergency systems, and the manufacturer built its first motor for a nuclear plant in 2022. In mining they are installed on conveyors, crushers, mills, drilling rigs and mine transport. There are also marine drives, traction and cable cars.
The total number of motors supplied by the manufacturer exceeds six thousand. In practice, direct starting from the grid is limited by the capability of the supply network, so for large machines the starting currents and voltage dips are checked. If speed control is needed, motors for converter operation are considered.
Bearings are selected according to the shaft position and loads. Rolling bearings are simpler to maintain, while sliding bearings are used for large machines and long continuous operation. The cooling method depends on site conditions, and the protection degree from IP21 to IP66 is determined by the presence of dust and moisture. A squirrel-cage rotor has no brushes, so maintenance comes down to the bearings and the winding. Inspection covers the bearing units and the winding first, and the motor parameters for each project are agreed before manufacture, including output, voltage and version.
