HRH / HRR — high-voltage wound-rotor induction motors up to 8 MW, 15 kV
HRH and HRR are high-voltage wound-rotor induction motors with slip rings, rated up to 8000 kW at voltage up to 15 kV. The wound rotor gives high starting torque at limited starting current, and the speed of a heavy machine can be controlled. HRH has open air cooling, HRR has closed tube cooling.

Description
The three-phase rotor winding is made with the same number of poles as the stator winding, connected in star or delta and brought out to three slip rings. A starting rheostat or, in the doubly-fed scheme, a converter is connected to the rings. After acceleration the rheostat is cut out, the rings are short-circuited, and the motor runs as an ordinary induction machine. The speed of both series is up to 1800 rpm. The motors allow direct starting, soft starting and operation from a VFD for voltage up to 15 kV, insulation class F or H.
HRH is cooled open, by air per IC11, IC21 or IC31 with one-sided or two-sided air supply. IEC frame sizes are 400–900, degree of protection up to IP23, mounting arrangements IM B3 (IM1001) and IM V1 (IM3011). HRR is enclosed, with a tubular air-to-air heat exchanger IC511. Its frame sizes are 500–1250, protection up to IP55, and it has three mounting arrangements: IM B3, IM B5 and IM V1. For dusty workshops the enclosed HRR is the suitable choice, while for clean machine halls HRH is sufficient.
Both series are built to IEC 60034 or NEMA MG1. For hazardous areas, marine installations and nuclear power plants a special design with ATEX and IECEx certification is available. The motors are assembled at the manufacturer's plant in Preding (Austria). Rotor and stator windings of high-voltage machines are also made by the group's subsidiaries in Bosnia and India.
A wound rotor is justified where the machine is hard to accelerate. These are ball and rod mills, crushers, fans with a large moment of inertia, compressors and pumps in the cement, mining, metallurgical and power industries. Another case is a weak grid, where direct starting of a squirrel-cage motor is difficult because of the high starting current. HRH and HRR are suitable to replace high-voltage wound-rotor motors АКН, АКЗ, ДАФ and their equivalents.
For a replacement, specify the power, stator voltage, rotor parameters, speed, starting method and connection dimensions. The rotor data are needed to match the new motor to the existing starting rheostat or converter. The maintenance of the slip ring and brush assembly is discussed separately, since the overhaul interval depends on it.
