HKR — high-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors with tube cooling up to 10 MW
HKR is a series of high-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors with IC511 tube cooling, rated up to 10 000 kW at voltage up to 15 kV. The motor is fully enclosed and needs no cooling water. The series is used on thermal power plant mills, nuclear plant pumps, compressors, and in chemicals, water supply and mining.

Description
The cooling tubes are built right into the frame. Internal air flows around the tubes on the outside, while outside air is blown through them from the inside by a shaft-mounted fan. The machine stays enclosed (TEPV, totally enclosed, tube-cooled) and has a compact height, so HKR more easily fits the place of an old motor in a cramped room. The design tolerates a polluted environment, which is valued in the cement and mining industries, where the air is very dusty. In the manufacturer's range the HKR series sits between the finned HKG motors and the more powerful HKL series with a separate air-to-air heat exchanger.
From a frequency converter the motor runs up to 3600 rpm, with IEC frame sizes 450–1320. Starting is direct from the grid, through a soft starter or from a VFD. Standard mounting arrangements are IM B3 (IM1001), IM B5 (IM3001) and IM V1 (IM3011), special ones on request. Degree of protection up to IP55, insulation class F or H. In the manufacturer's overview materials the series is given as MKR/HKR with voltages of 0.4–15 kV, MKR denoting the low-voltage variant.
The winding is formed and impregnated by the vacuum pressure method, as in the manufacturer's other high-voltage machines. The motors are tested on the plant's own test field in Preding. The series is designed to IEC 60034 or NEMA MG1. For hazardous areas a special design with ATEX and IECEx certification is available, and marine versions and motors for nuclear power plants are made separately.
At coal-fired plants HKR drive coal mills, and at nuclear plants boric acid injection pumps and other pumps. The series also works on fuel gas compressors, and on pumps and fans in chemical plants, water supply and mining. Deliveries include motors for the MAN Rasfuel project. HKR is suitable to replace enclosed high-voltage 6–10 kV induction motors with tube cooling.
When replacing an old motor, specify the power, voltage, speed, starting method, mounting arrangement and connection dimensions. For dusty workshops, access to the heat exchanger tubes for cleaning is discussed separately, because winding temperature depends on their condition. The 6 and 10 kV voltages typical of old motors lie within the series range up to 15 kV.

Questions and answers
What power and voltage do the HKR motors have?
Up to 10 000 kW at voltage up to 15 kV. From a VFD the motor runs up to 3600 rpm, with IEC frame sizes 450–1320.
Does the HKR motor need cooling water?
No, cooling is by tubes under the IC511 (TEPV) scheme. Outside air is blown through the tubes built into the frame, and the internal circuit stays closed.
Which motors can the HKR series replace?
Enclosed high-voltage 6–10 kV induction motors with tube cooling, including in the cement and mining industries. Mounting arrangements are IM B3, IM B5 and IM V1.
