HKM / HKMF — high-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors with air-to-water cooling up to 35 MW, 15 kV
HKM and HKMF are the most powerful series of high-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors from the manufacturer, up to 35 000 kW at voltage up to 15 kV. The motors are enclosed, with an air-to-water heat exchanger on the frame. They drive large pumps, fans and compressors at thermal and nuclear power plants and oil and gas facilities.

Description
The internal motor air circulates in a closed circuit and gives up heat to water in the heat exchanger. Water carries away more heat than outside air, so more power can be taken from the same active volume than with an air-to-air scheme. HKM is cooled per IC81W (TEAWC), HKMF per IC86W with additional forced ventilation. The series is made at the manufacturer's plant in Preding and Weiz, which belongs to the Voith group. On site a cooling water circuit must be brought to the motor, and this is the first thing checked when designing a replacement.
From a frequency converter the motor accelerates to 3600 rpm. IEC frame sizes are from 355 to 1400. The motor can be started directly from the grid, through a soft starter or from a VFD for voltage up to 15 kV. Standard mounting arrangements are IM B3 (IM1001) and IM V1 (IM3011), special ones on request. Degree of protection up to IP55, insulation class F or H.
The high-voltage winding is wound from formed coils and pressure-impregnated on an automated line. The coils are made with high precision from special insulating materials, and the impregnation technology is designed for long winding life. High-voltage induction motors are built to order for voltages from 1 to 15 kV. The motors are built to IEC 60034 or NEMA MG1. For hazardous areas, versions with ATEX and IECEx certification and protection types Ex e and Ex p are available. Marine versions and versions for nuclear power plants are also available.
For nuclear plants the motors are qualified under test programs stricter than the requirements of KTA 3504, with LOCA and ANLE modes. The windings withstand irradiation up to 200 kGy. At thermal plants HKM and HKMF drive boiler feed pumps, main circulation and condensate pumps, forced-draft fans, induced-draft fans and coal mills. In industry these are air separation unit compressors, gas pipeline and LNG compressors, and extruders.
For a motor replacement the request should state the power and voltage, speed, starting method, mounting arrangement, connection dimensions and cooling water parameters. If the machine runs from a VFD, add the converter data. For a hazardous area or a nuclear plant, the protection type or qualification program is also needed.
