HKL — high-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors with air-to-air cooling up to 15 MW
HKL is a series of enclosed high-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors with an air-to-air heat exchanger, up to 15 000 kW and 15 kV. The motor needs no cooling water, and workshop air does not enter the machine. The series is installed on power plant pumps, compressors, fans and mills.

Description
The air-to-air scheme is convenient where water cannot be supplied to the motor or where its presence is undesirable. The internal circuit stays closed, and heat passes through the heat exchanger to the outside air. Workshop air contacts only the outer side of the heat exchanger, so dust and moisture do not reach the winding. Basic cooling is IC611 (TEAAC). In output, HKL sits in the manufacturer's range above the tube-cooled HKR and is exceeded only by HKM motors with air-to-water cooling. At low speeds when running from a VFD the shaft-mounted fan is not enough, so the heat exchanger is blown by a separate fan under schemes IC616 and IC666.
From a frequency converter the motor runs up to 3600 rpm, with IEC frame sizes 450–1400. Starting is direct from the grid, through a soft starter or as part of an adjustable-speed drive. Standard mounting arrangements are IM B3 (IM1001) and IM V1 (IM3011), special ones on request. Degree of protection up to IP55, insulation class F or H. In the manufacturer's overview catalogs the series is shown as MKL/HKL with a voltage range of 0.4–15 kV, where MKL denotes the low-voltage variant.
The motors are built to IEC 60034 or NEMA MG1. For hazardous areas there is a special design with ATEX and IECEx certification and protection types Ex e and Ex p. The manufacturer also offers marine versions and versions for nuclear power plants. HKL can be ordered as a drop-in replacement for a machine from another maker, when the foundation and connection dimensions stay unchanged. For refurbishment this reduces the civil part of the work to a minimum.
At power plants, including nuclear plants, HKL motors drive feed pumps, cooling pumps and condensate pumps. In oil and gas they drive compressors; deliveries include motors for Cameron in Tashkent and Ruhrpumpen for KazTransOil. Other applications cover booster compressors, fans, mills and water supply pumps.
Selecting a replacement requires the power, voltage and speed, starting method, mounting arrangement, and foundation and shaft dimensions. If the drive is adjustable, state the speed range, since it determines whether a separate heat exchanger fan is needed. For a hazardous area the protection type is specified, and for a nuclear plant the qualification program and test list are agreed.

Questions and answers
What power and voltage do the HKL motors have?
Up to 15 000 kW at voltage up to 15 kV, speed from a VFD up to 3600 rpm. IEC frame sizes are 450–1400.
What cooling system does the HKL series use?
The basic scheme is IC611 (TEAAC) with an air-to-air heat exchanger. For VFD operation at low speeds an external fan under IC616 or IC666 is used.
Can HKL be installed in place of a motor from another maker?
The manufacturer offers HKL as a drop-in replacement keeping the foundation and connection dimensions. The motors are built to IEC 60034 or NEMA MG1.
