HKG — high-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors with finned frame (IC411) up to 2.5 MW, 13.8 kV
HKG is a series of compact high-voltage squirrel-cage induction motors in a self-ventilated finned frame, up to 2500 kW at voltage up to 13.8 kV. Heat is removed through the fins by an air flow from a fan on the other end of the shaft, without heat exchangers or water. The series covers medium power ratings at power plants and oil, gas and chemical facilities.

Description
A self-ventilated finned frame is among the simplest and most common designs of an enclosed motor. Cooling is IC411 (TEFC), with no separate circuits or heat exchangers that must be cleaned and maintained. From a frequency converter the motor runs in the range from 0 to 3600 rpm. IEC frame sizes are 315–560, although the manufacturer's overview for nuclear power states a wider range of 250–630. In these frame sizes the series covers outputs up to 2500 kW; larger machines the manufacturer builds with heat exchangers, in the HKR, HKL and HKM series.
Starting is direct, through a soft starter or from a VFD. Standard mounting arrangements are IM B3 (IM1001), IM B5 (IM3001) and IM V1 (IM3011), special ones on request. Foot, flange and vertical flange mounting cover most pump and fan installations. Degree of protection up to IP55, insulation class F or H. In the manufacturer's overview catalogs the series is designated MKG/HKG with voltages of 0.4–13.8 kV. MKG corresponds to the low-voltage variant, which is a separate item.
The motors are built to IEC 60034 or NEMA MG1. For hazardous areas, marine installations and nuclear plants there are special designs with ATEX and IECEx certification. For nuclear plants, low- and high-voltage motors and windings are qualified under programs stricter than KTA 3504. The program includes LOCA tests, that is, simulation of a loss-of-coolant accident, and ANLE, as well as dry and damp heat tests per IEC 60068-2-2 and IEC 60068-2-30.
HKG is installed on medium-power pumps, fans and compressors at power plants, in the oil, gas and chemical industries, water supply and mining. One application example is the drive of a nitrogen compressor at the Mudn al Iraq facility. A finned motor is convenient where there is no cooling water and extra equipment around the machine is undesirable.
For selection, state the power, voltage, speed, starting method, mounting arrangement and connection dimensions. If the motor will run from a VFD at low speeds, this is agreed separately, because the shaft-mounted fan then delivers less air. For hazardous areas the protection type is specified, and for nuclear plants the required qualification program.

Questions and answers
What voltage and power are the HKG motors rated for?
Up to 2500 kW at voltage up to 13.8 kV. Speed from a VFD is 0–3600 rpm.
How is the HKG motor cooled?
Per IC411 (TEFC). Air from a fan on the other end of the shaft blows over the frame fins, and no water or heat exchangers are needed.
What tests do HKG motors for nuclear plants undergo?
Qualification under programs exceeding KTA 3504, with LOCA and ANLE tests. The motors are also tested with dry and damp heat per IEC 60068-2-2 and IEC 60068-2-30.
