Description
The motors continue the more than 150-year electrical machine tradition of an Italian plant that changed owners in 2012–2013. They are engineered to order for heavy industrial applications, and reverse engineering is carried out to replace machines of discontinued brands.
The rating is 150–25 000 kW (200–33 000 hp), the voltage is up to 15 kV, and the number of poles is 2–36. The shaft height is from 315 to 1120 mm, with large frame sizes 10–13 also available, and the weight is from 1.5 to 120 t. The motors are made in horizontal and vertical designs. Cooling per IEC: IC01, IC31, IC411/416, IC511/516, IC611/616/666, IC81W, IC86W. Versions for explosive atmospheres are possible.
The frames are welded steel, rigid and durable. The standard rotor has an aluminium squirrel cage, and a copper or brass cage is made on request. Rotor cores up to frame size 800 are stacked from solid laminations, and larger ones from segments. The short-circuit rings made of a special aluminium alloy are welded to the bars. The stator is manufactured as a separate assembly and installed in the frame after winding and impregnation using MICASYSTEM® VPI technology. It is based on mica tape and a solvent-free epoxy resin mixture. This class F insulation is qualified for nuclear power plants and aggressive environments.
The bearings are rolling-element (life L5–L10) or sleeve, with self-lubrication or forced lubrication. For two-pole machines, strict vibration requirements per API 546 apply. Starting is direct, from a frequency converter (the rigid shaft permits an unlimited speed range) or through a soft starter.
The motors are calculated by the finite element method and analytical tools for the specific application. They comply with customer specifications, including Shell DEP, and with API standards. There is experience of operation at −60 °C on the Trans-Siberian pipeline. The motors are made to an individual design, not from a stock series. The frame size, cooling method, bearing type and rotor design are agreed with the customer for the specific project. Reverse engineering is used when a machine of a brand that is no longer on the market must be replaced. Applications are oil and gas, power generation, metallurgy, mining and water supply.
