Description
High-speed machines are those with a rated speed above 3600 rpm. They always run from a frequency converter, so they are supplied as a drive system with a matched high-frequency converter. The Tailormade XL version is designed for 0.69–11 kV and power up to 50 MW. Supply frequency reaches 500 Hz, the motors are two-pole, and speed ranges from 3600 rpm at 50 MW to 30,000 rpm at 1 MW.
Two rotor types are used. The laminated one covers roughly 1 MW/12,000 rpm to 20 MW/3600 rpm, the solid one 1 MW/18,000 rpm to 46 MW/3600 rpm; higher power and speed combinations are possible on request. The solid rotor gives smooth running at limit speeds.
The housing is welded steel, frame size 315–900 mm, water cooling IC86W, sleeve or magnetic bearings, degree of protection IP55, version B3. For explosive atmospheres the protection types Ex p, Ex eb and Ex ec are available. A high-speed motor replaces motor-plus-multiplier schemes and steam or gas turbine drives: the absence of a gearbox reduces losses, footprint and maintenance costs, and frequency control allows speed to be varied over a wide range. The welded steel housing together with sleeve or magnetic bearings and IC86W water cooling gives stable low-vibration operation even under high thermal and mechanical loads. All versions have degree of protection IP55 and need minimal maintenance.
Typical applications are turbocompressors and compressors of gas transmission and process plants, high-speed and large pumps, turboblowers, industrial fans, and special machines of the chemical, oil and gas industries and power generation. The motors are developed and tested at the plant in Dresden, and the standard delivery time according to the manufacturer's data for 2024/2025 is 10–12 months. There is also a low-voltage air-cooled High-Speed IC416 series (up to 0.69 kV, 10–1050 kW), which is listed as a separate item.
