High-speed permanent magnet synchronous motors of 1000–10 000 kW at 3–10 kV accelerate to 20 000 rpm. They are coupled directly to the impeller of a turbo compressor, blower, fan or pump without a gearbox. The motor always operates as part of a variable frequency drive.

Description
In the traditional scheme an induction or synchronous motor accelerates the compressor through a gearbox that raises the speed. A high-speed permanent magnet machine removes this link together with the gearbox oil system. The unit becomes smaller, there are no transmission losses, and the maintenance volume is reduced. Permanent magnets on the rotor need no excitation current, so there are fewer losses in the rotor than in an induction machine, and at high speeds it heats less.
The technical data are power 1000–10 000 kW, speed 4000–20 000 rpm, voltage 3000–10 000 V, shaft height H355–800. The supply frequency from the converter reaches 667 Hz. Cooling is IC86W or IC37W with a water circuit, and also IC666 with an air-to-air cooler and independent ventilation. Degree of protection is IP55 or IP56, mounting IMB3 and IMB35. The high supply frequency is linked to the small number of poles and the high rotor speed, so the converter must be designed for exactly this output range.
Bearings are selected by speed and load. These are rolling bearings, sleeve bearings or magnetic bearings with rotor levitation, which work without lubrication and mechanical contact. For explosive zones a pressurised enclosure Ex pxb is provided. The manufacturer describes the series as compact and light, with high power density, low noise and vibration, and convenient in operation. The motor keeps high efficiency at high speeds and has good dynamic characteristics. A magnetic suspension is chosen for the highest speeds and where oil in the circuit is undesirable, for example in process gas compressors.
The main users are compressor stations in the oil and gas and chemical industries, air separation units, boosting and vacuum systems, test stands and high-speed pumps. The manufacturer's site separately names compressors, fans and water pumps among typical high-speed loads. IC86W and IC37W water cooling suit an enclosed compressor house with process water, and IC666 air cooling suits sites where there is no water.
For the power industry and industry of Ukraine the item is relevant for modernisation of compressor and blower units where the aim is to get rid of the gearbox and the oil lubrication system. Such modernisation also affects the compressor itself, so the project is usually run together with its manufacturer, and the variable frequency drive is selected for the output frequency of the motor.
