Description

High-speed synchronous motors are two-pole machines rated from 4 to 40 MW for variable-speed drives up to 8000 rpm. They are intended for direct (gearless) drive of high-speed machinery: centrifugal compressors of gas pipeline and process plants, pumps and test benches, fed from frequency drives. The manufacturer offers machines of all types, from high-speed two-pole motors to very low-speed ones, and adapts the design to the electrical and mechanical requirements of the customer.

A variable-speed synchronous motor combines high efficiency, precise control and the ability to operate at a leading power factor. Stator windings are globally impregnated under vacuum and pressure, rotors have brushless excitation; for large machines, impregnation in sections or by bars is possible. Cooling is by air or water coolers or open air.

The scope of supply can include the manufacturer's own medium-voltage frequency drives of 3.3–11 kV with PWM IGBT modules (3- and 5-level circuits, DFE or AFE) and excitation regulators. The motor, drive and excitation regulator can be ordered as one package. Alongside the high-speed machines, the manufacturer designs and makes low-speed motors that start directly from the grid for compressor and petrochemical drives. Calculation tools make it possible to check the behavior of the system and limit the effect of starting on the grid, with a transformer or reactors if needed; the rotors have a device for automatic synchronization with the grid.

The manufacturer has extensive experience with synchronous drives. In 1982 synchronous motors fed by naturally commutated thyristor converters were developed for mainline locomotives, followed by six-pole synchronous traction motors for the TGV Atlantique. Permanent magnet motors for propulsion systems gain in volume and performance and offer acoustic stealth. The production base includes four specialized plants in France (the main site, Champagne-sur-Seine, Carquefou, Étupes) and a plant in India (Vadodara). The main site has a 5.4 m impregnation tank, 55 overhead cranes, four test platforms and four balancing benches.
