Description
Motors for explosive atmospheres are built in three main types of protection. Increased safety motors Ex ec (formerly Ex nA) are intended for gas zone 2, motors with protection by enclosure against dust ignition Ex tc for zone 22, and motors with protection by pressurisation or purging Ex p meet the requirements of zone 1. All motors for zones where explosive gas and dust mixtures may form comply with the applicable European ATEX directives.
The programme covers outputs from 55 to about 5000 kW at voltages up to 13.8 kV for 50 and 60 Hz networks, all standard frame sizes and the mounting arrangements IM B3, B5, V1, B35. The motors are built with a squirrel-cage rotor, and in special designs also with a wound rotor. The cooling systems vary, including IC411, IC611 and IC81W. Explosion-proof machines face increased requirements for mechanical design and internal air circuits, for electrical insulation dimensions and for protection against impermissible heating; they are made in an especially strong design with high dimensional accuracy for gas-tight and oil-tight joints. Degrees of protection higher than the standard IP55 are often used, including IP56, IP65, IP66 and IP67, for the coal industry, deserts, drilling rig decks and ships.
A separate specialisation is individual design and fast supply of explosion-proof replacement motors, including for severe conditions such as coal mills. References include motors for a cement plant in Senegal (zone 22), an ATEX zone 2 compressor motor for an oil and gas company in Algeria, 5500 and 6000 V motors for compressors with enclosure pressurisation, fast supply of a 6600 V ATEX motor, an Ex p 10.5 kV compressor motor for zone 1, a modular 11 kV motor for a British gas company and a 690 V ATEX mill motor in drop-in design.
Typical applications: starting of gas and steam turbines, driving compressors, boiler induced-draft fans, fans, pumps and agitators in the oil and gas, chemical, cement and coal industries. The series is considered as a replacement for explosion-proof high-voltage motors of the ВАО, 2АЗМВ, АЗМВ series by purpose and parameters.
