Description
DC motors are produced with ratings from 0.5 to 5 MW. According to the manufacturer, they are used in metallurgy (drives of rolling mills and auxiliary machinery), at thermal power plants, in mining, in petrochemicals in explosion-proof design, at compressed air energy storage plants, in hydraulic engineering and at nuclear plants. In nuclear power these include, in particular, the main helium blowers of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.
The DC drive remains in service where a high starting torque, a wide and smooth speed control range and a high overload capacity are required. Rolling mill drives work with frequent starts, reversals and shock loads, so these qualities are the main ones for them. Speed is controlled by changing the armature voltage and the field current, so control is smooth, without steps. The second typical case is the modernisation of existing DC drives with thyristor converters. In metallurgy and at thermal power plants such drives work on auxiliary machinery and on rolling mills.
The manufacturer's electric motor business dates back to 1959. At that time the first induction motor rated 7 kW and the first 480 kW synchronous motor were produced. Today the range comprises about 180 series and 1890 frame sizes with ratings from 0.18 to 120 000 kW and rotational speeds from 5 to 10 000 rpm. The same line includes synchronous motors from 0.3 to 120 MW and induction motors from 0.5 to 35 MW.
The motors are supplied as part of complete electric drives, and the manufacturer also performs their servicing. For the customer this means one supplier for the motor, the excitation and the drive control. Rated voltages, rotational speeds, excitation and cooling systems by series are not given in the available materials and are clarified with the manufacturer during selection. The commutator and brush assembly of a DC motor needs periodic inspection, which is taken into account in the maintenance schedule. The explosion-proof design for petrochemical facilities is agreed separately. Manufacturing is in Deyang (Sichuan, China).

Questions and answers
What is the power of the DC motors?
DC motors are produced with ratings from 0.5 to 5 MW. For higher ratings the line includes induction and synchronous motors.
Where are DC motors better than AC ones?
Where a high starting torque, a wide and smooth speed control range and a high overload capacity are required. These include, in particular, rolling mill drives.
Is an explosion-proof design available?
Yes, in petrochemicals DC motors are used in explosion-proof design. The explosion protection parameters by series are not given in the materials and are clarified with the manufacturer.
