Description
The company is one of the world's leading centres of competence in DC machines and one of the few that can replace a machine from another manufacturer with its own, fully taking the electrical and mechanical characteristics into account. The experience has been built up over many decades. The machine is adapted to the specific application, and the range extends from small machines to very large ones.
The programme covers DC motors and generators rated from 10 to 8000 kW, although the manufacturer's page states a range of 50–8000 kW. Shaft height is from 132–160 to 1000 mm in a rectangular frame, and above that the frame is round. Torque is from 20 to approximately 900,000 N·m, speed up to 10,000 rpm. All machines are built individually, in horizontal and vertical versions, in all standard types of protection and cooling.
For hazardous areas zones 1 and 2 there are purged versions Ex px and Ex pz. Up to a shaft height of 315 mm the terminal boxes are square and can be rotated by 90 degrees, so the cable can also be entered in the axial direction. The motors are built to thermal class H (up to 180 °C); if they are operated to class F (up to 155 °C), the life of the insulation and winding increases.
In recent years the volume has been better utilised, maintenance costs reduced, thermal and magnetic utilisation improved and brush life significantly extended. DC machines have high power density, good control properties and a clear control structure, quiet and smooth running, high starting torque from standstill, do not cause overvoltages in the insulation and have high electromagnetic compatibility.
Examples of deliveries. A 3800 kW main DC motor, 0–52/120 rpm, weighing 110 t for a rolling mill stand, replacing a tandem motor from 1908. Eight thruster motors of 2160 kW, 720 rpm each for a drilling platform. A 950 kW propulsion motor, 12–250 rpm for a research vessel. A 1640 kW motor, 20–285 rpm for the hoist of a copper mine.
