Description
The company was one of the first to apply AC technology in oilfield equipment. More than 8000 such motors have been supplied to drilling contractors worldwide, and thousands more went to locomotives and mining equipment. Besides drawworks, pumps, rotary tables, top drives and anchor winches on all types of rigs, the motors are used in ship propulsion installations, thrusters, dredgers, conveyors, mixers, compressors, pumps and cranes.
The stator is six-pole with form-wound copper windings, and the rotor has bars of copper-chrome alloy. Class H insulation of the Mica-Kapton system is applied by robotic tape winding. The shaft of 4340 steel carries an ABS certificate, and the bearing on the non-drive side is insulated. The design service life is 20 years with a design margin of 1.5.
Winding temperature is monitored by two 100 Ω platinum RTDs per phase, and ventilation is monitored by a pressure sensor. 200 W strip heaters on each side prevent the winding from absorbing moisture during downtime. The IP56 stainless steel terminal box can be moved from one side to the other, and connections are made with copper busbars to the short-circuit rings.
The 5GEB22 rated 1150 hp (858 kW) is produced in versions A (output shaft), D (extended shaft for belt load) and E (bearing for direct coupling), and its fan is 13 kW. The 5GEB28B and 5GEB29B are rated 1600 hp (1193 kW), with bearings for axial or radial loads and a 22 kW fan. The 5GEB28B is intended for gear drive and the 5GEB29B for belt drive. The 5GEB2000HA/HB is rated 2000 hp (1491 kW) and also works through a gearbox.
Mounting dimensions and shaft height are the same as for the 5GE752 DC motor, which simplifies the change from DC to AC on existing rigs. The basic version is IP44 with louvres, and a closed TEWAC IP56 and an economical IP23 are available. For hazardous areas the motors are certified to ATEX, IECEx, CAN/CSA and ANSI/UL, and for offshore facilities they are approved by the classification societies ABS and DNV.
