Sour Service large-diameter pipes for sour gas (H₂S), API 5L Annex H / NACE
Sour Service are large-diameter SAWL (UOE) pipes for gas pipelines carrying hydrogen sulphide-containing gas, from high H₂S content to mildly sour media. The outside diameter is 610–1524 mm, wall up to 52 mm, length up to 18.3 m. They are made to API 5L PSL 2 Annex H and, on request, also to NACE and DNV.

Description
The pipes are intended for transporting natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, from high H₂S content to mildly sour gases. The manufacturer can produce sour service pipes in the shortest lead times. Each version is selected for the project conditions to combine mechanical strength with corrosion resistance, above all to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and sulphide stress cracking. Resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking is checked in the HIC laboratory.
The heavy plate for these pipes is supplied by the manufacturer's shareholders. It is rolled by thermomechanical technology at mills in Dunkirk, Dillingen and Mülheim, and has specified cleanliness, strength, toughness and weldability. A separate research direction is the further development of X70 grade pipes for aggressive media. The work is carried out together with a research institute whose laboratories are accredited.
The range corresponds to the main line: outside diameter from 610 to 1524 mm, wall thickness up to 52 mm, length up to 18.3 m. The API 5L licence (5L-0232) covers PSL 2 pipes under Annex H (pipes for sour service) in the thermomechanical condition M up to X70 and in the normalised condition N up to X52, as well as PSL 2 pipes under Annex J (offshore pipelines) up to X80 and X52 respectively. The grades in the licence are set separately for condition M and condition N. On request the pipes are also made to NACE, DNV and customer specifications. In the North Sea, pipes of grades up to X70, including for sour gas, have been in service since the 1970s.
Manufacture at the Mülheim an der Ruhr plant by the UOE process includes edge crimping, forming in U- and O-presses, tack welding, internal and external seams by submerged arc welding, mechanical expansion, hydrostatic testing, sampling and destructive tests, final ultrasonic inspection of the weld, radiography (including film-free), acceptance and issue of certificates.
The pipes are supplied with external and internal coatings. They are used in gas pipelines from fields with hydrogen sulphide-containing gas, in industrial and trunk pipelines onshore and offshore, and in pipelines to gas processing plants.

Questions and answers
What strength grades does the licence for sour service pipes cover?
The API 5L licence (5L-0232) covers PSL 2 pipes under Annex H in condition M up to X70 and in condition N up to X52. For offshore pipelines under Annex J it applies up to X80 and X52 respectively.
What sizes of Sour Service pipes are made?
Outside diameter from 610 to 1524 mm, wall thickness up to 52 mm, length up to 18.3 m.
What types of failure are these pipes selected against?
The versions are selected above all against hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and sulphide stress cracking. In the North Sea, pipes of grades up to X70, including for sour gas, have been in service since the 1970s.
