SAWL (UOE) longitudinally welded large-diameter pipes 610–1524 mm for onshore gas trunk pipelines
SAWL (UOE) are longitudinally welded large-diameter steel pipes with an outside diameter of 610–1524 mm and a wall thickness of up to 52 mm. They are made by submerged arc welding at the Mülheim an der Ruhr plant (Germany). The pipes are intended for onshore gas trunk pipelines, with a design pressure of up to 250 bar in completed projects.

Description
This is the main line of pipes for long-distance natural gas transport. The pipes are made for a specific project to the international standards API, EN, ISO or to special customer requirements. The outside diameter is from 610 to 1524 mm (24 to 60 inches), the wall thickness up to 52 mm, and the length up to 18.3 m (60 feet). Additional customer requirements include NACE and DNV. The series is designed for demanding conditions, including the lowest temperatures in Arctic regions.
The API Spec Q1 / API 5L licence (5L-0232) covers plain-end pipes of PSL 1 up to X70 and PSL 2 in the thermomechanically rolled condition up to X120. In onshore projects, steel L485 ME / 485 MB was used at diameters up to 56 inches. These are the OPAL (473 km), NEL (441 km) and EUGAL (794 km, 630 thousand t of pipes) gas pipelines in Germany and the onshore section of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline TAP (48 inches). The design pressure in completed projects is up to 250 bar.
The pipes are made at the Mülheim an der Ruhr plant by the UOE process: edge crimping, forming in U- and O-presses, tack welding, internal and external seams by submerged arc welding, mechanical expansion, hydrostatic testing, sampling and destructive tests, final ultrasonic inspection of the weld, radiography (including film-free), acceptance and issue of certificates. The annual capacity of the plant is up to 1.4 million t, or about 2000 km of pipe.
The heavy plate is supplied by the manufacturer's shareholders from rolling mills in Dunkirk, Dillingen and Mülheim. The plate is rolled by thermomechanical technology, which gives the required strength, toughness and weldability. Short logistics chains reduce delivery times. The plant ships up to seven trains and up to 100 trucks per day.
External and internal anti-corrosion coatings are applied by a subsidiary with a capacity of over 4.5 million m² per year. The management system is certified to API Spec Q1, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 50001. The company is a materials manufacturer under directive 2014/68/EU and AD 2000-W0, and welding production complies with ISO 3834-2.
