Description

Large-diameter pipes are made for transporting hydrogen, both gas mixtures with a high hydrogen content and pure hydrogen. Building hydrogen infrastructure, that is, pipelines, storage and transport systems, requires pipes qualified specifically for this medium. The manufacturer's experience here exceeds one hundred years, since as early as the beginning of the 20th century the Mülheim plant produced pipes for transporting town gas with a high hydrogen content.

Pipes for hydrogen are tested to the international standard ASME B31.12 at independent research institutes. Pipes that have passed the demanding KIH test (determination of resistance to crack growth in a hydrogen environment) meet the highest requirements for quality, safety and future viability. The KIH test to ASME B31.12 has been passed, among others, by pipes for the Net4Gas Capacity for Gas, Fluxys Opwijk–Desteldonk and SNAM Adriatica gas pipelines. According to the manufacturer, such pipes are potentially suitable for other new energy carriers as well, for example ammonia, and the manufacturer itself takes part in research projects on transporting hydrogen, CO₂ and ammonia.

A separate version is the Carbonlite pipe, made within a pilot project. It uses plate melted by the electric steelmaking route, which reduces CO₂ emissions during production by more than 70%. Carbonlite pipes are marked Ready for H2 and intended for energy transition projects. The carbon footprint is confirmed by the environmental product declaration EPD for an LSAW pipe with an anti-corrosion coating (EPD-EUP-20250241-IBA1-EN).

The range covers outside diameters from 610 to 1524 mm, wall thickness up to 52 mm and length up to 18.3 m; manufacture is to API 5L, EN, ISO and customer requirements. The pipes are made at the Mülheim an der Ruhr plant by the UOE process: edge crimping, forming in U- and O-presses, tack welding, internal and external seams by submerged arc welding, mechanical expansion, hydrostatic testing, sampling and destructive tests, final ultrasonic inspection of the weld, radiography (including film-free), acceptance and issue of certificates. External and internal coatings are applied at the same site. The pipes are used in new hydrogen trunk lines, gas pipelines with hydrogen blending, in the repurposing of gas transmission systems and in industrial clusters.

Questions and answers

What diameters and wall thicknesses does the range of hydrogen pipes cover?

Outside diameter from 610 to 1524 mm, wall thickness up to 52 mm, length up to 18.3 m. Manufacture is to API 5L, EN, ISO and customer requirements.

What standard are the hydrogen pipes qualified to?

To ASME B31.12, with tests at independent research institutes. The KIH test to this standard has been passed by pipes for the Net4Gas Capacity for Gas, Fluxys Opwijk–Desteldonk and SNAM Adriatica gas pipelines.

What is the Carbonlite version, and what CO₂ saving does it give?

These are pipes made of plate melted by the electric steelmaking route, with more than 70% lower CO₂ emissions during production. They are marked Ready for H2, and the carbon footprint is confirmed by an EPD declaration.
