Description

SHD are monobloc insulating joints (insulating inserts) that interrupt the metallic electrical conductivity of a pipeline. They are needed in cathodic corrosion protection systems. The joint separates the protected section of the pipeline from the station equipment, cuts off stray currents and makes it possible to organise protection of individual sections. It is used on gas pipelines, oil pipelines, pipelines for flammable liquids, water, technical gases including oxygen and hydrogen, and in heat supply, in underground and above-ground installation.

The design is ready for installation, fully welded with force-locking and form-locking, so over time it does not lose pre-tensioning force and does not need re-tightening. The built-in patented ring spark gap protects the insulating element from breakdown during overvoltages, for example from lightning discharges. If required, brackets for an external spark gap are fitted, ATEX and fire-resistant versions are available. The external insulation is uniform and seamless, the body is rigid and resistant to bending.

Symmetrical and asymmetrical versions are made with weld ends, flanges or welded flanges, and the outside diameter, connection and wall thickness are defined by the customer's specification. Steel and insulation materials are selected according to temperature and medium, calculation follows the AD2000 or ASME rules. External protection is a heat-shrink sleeve according to DIN 30672, polyurethane and other coatings, internal coating on request. Sizes from 1″ to 60″ (DN 25–1500), design pressure up to PN 420. There is a standard version (from −10 to +50 °C, the manufacturer's page gives from −20 to +60 °C), a low-temperature version (from −60 °C) and a high-temperature version (up to +150 °C).

Manufacture follows DIN EN 12007-3, DVGW worksheet G 463, the PED and ATEX directives, DIN 30690-1, TRFL, ÖVGW G 24 and EN 1594. SHD holds PED certificates (modules B, C2 and H) and TÜV approval according to bulletin BP-ISOL. For drinking and process water, brines and waste water there is the SHD-W version with internal lining, which lengthens the current path through the medium, for pipelines up to DN 1600 and PN 4–64. For district heating networks the SHLO version is made.

Questions and answers

What is the SHD insulating joint for and how is the insulating element protected?

The joint separates the protected section of the pipeline from the station equipment and cuts off stray currents in cathodic protection systems. The built-in patented ring spark gap protects the insulating element from breakdown during overvoltages.

Which sizes, pressures and temperatures does SHD cover?

Sizes from 1″ to 60″ (DN 25–1500), design pressure up to PN 420. The standard version works from −10 to +50 °C, the low-temperature version from −60 °C, the high-temperature version up to +150 °C.

Is there an SHD version for drinking water?

Yes, SHD-W with internal lining for drinking and process water, brines and waste water. It is designed for pipelines up to DN 1600 and PN 4–64.
