Description
Mitrac Transformer onboard traction transformers are designed for AC rolling stock. The manufacturer's experience in transformer engineering dates back to 1920. Today the company is one of the leading suppliers of onboard traction transformers to train builders and operators worldwide, with a dedicated traction transformer competence centre (R&D, engineering, production).
The transformers are developed on ecodesign principles. The optimised architecture reduces energy consumption, mass and volume, raises mean time between failures (MTBF), lowers noise and life cycle costs, and requires minimal maintenance. One example is a naturally cooled transformer for regional trains: no fans are needed, because the airflow generated by the moving train is directed onto the radiators. This gives about 12 % energy savings and noticeably lowers the cost of ownership. The transformers are highly recyclable.
Power is from 0.5 to 10 MVA, power density is about 1 kVA per kilogram of mass, and there can be up to four input voltages, with integrated DC chokes. The high power density makes it easier to place the transformer under the floor or on the roof of a car. More than 400 transformers are produced every year, and more than 5000 are in commercial service.
Applications cover locomotives, light rail, metro, commuter, regional and high-speed trains, with different designs and installation options. Standardisation allows these transformers to be fitted both to the manufacturer's own cars and to cars of other builders.
Projects include the high-capacity Coradia Stream for CFL (Luxembourg), RER NG for SNCF (25 kV) and TGV M Avelia Horizon (25 kV, 4.5 MVA with integrated chokes). Simulation, validation and test facilities are used for verification, and the products comply with current railway standards. Service operates worldwide, and global transformer maintenance programmes are available for customers and operators. A strict procurement policy, a quality policy, production equipment and qualified personnel support high product quality. Energy efficiency, low mass and volume, low noise and increased MTBF determine the cost of ownership of the transformer over its whole life cycle, and it can work on trains regardless of who built the cars.

Questions and answers
What power range do Mitrac Transformer onboard traction transformers cover?
The rating is from 0.5 to 10 MVA. Power density is about 1 kVA/kg, and there can be up to four input voltages with integrated DC chokes.
What is an example of a transformer for a high-speed train?
The TGV M Avelia Horizon uses a 25 kV, 4.5 MVA transformer with integrated chokes. A 25 kV version is used for RER NG.
How does natural cooling of the transformer work?
No fans are needed, because the airflow generated by the moving train is directed onto the radiators. For regional trains this design saves 12 % of energy.
