Description
Power transformers have been built at the Loughborough site since the early twentieth century and today operate all over the world. The standard range covers ratings from 5 to 120 MVA for systems up to and including 145 kV. The brochure names the 6.6, 11, 33, 66 and 132 kV classes, as well as auxiliary transformers, generator transformers and autotransformers.
Transformers are designed to customer requirements and to many national and international specifications: ENATS (UK network companies), IEC, ANSI, Shell DEP, Aramco and railway standards. For DNOs, Tier 2 efficiency transformers are supplied under framework agreements. Efficiency complies with EU Regulation 548 (EcoDesign), Tier 2 level. Besides mineral oil, Midel and FR3 are used as insulating liquids for environmentally sensitive and urban sites.
Cooling ranges from natural to directed oil circulation by pumps and forced air, with water heat exchangers if required. Tanks are designed for full vacuum. Voltage is regulated by an OLTC (externally mounted or built into the tank) or an off-circuit tap changer, and OLTC control panels can be remote. To reduce noise, low-noise core stacking and variable-speed fans are used. The insulation structure is optimised for minimum partial discharge, which extends service life. The compact design reduces the substation footprint and civil works costs.
Monitoring uses fibre-optic temperature sensors and gas analysis systems. A full set of accessories and protection devices, including digital ones, is provided, as well as remote control cabinets. Design is carried out in 3D with finite element field calculations and strength analysis. An example is a custom 132 kV transformer for a data centre site. Applications include DNO networks, industry, infrastructure, oil and gas, renewables and transport.
Transformers are fully assembled and tested at the factory in Loughborough (United Kingdom). The test facility complies with IEC (BS EN) and ENA and performs routine and type tests of transformers up to 170 kV. These include impulse tests, temperature rise tests, SFRA, and measurement of partial discharge, losses and noise level.

Questions and answers
What rating and voltage class does the power transformer range cover?
Ratings from 5 to 120 MVA for systems up to and including 145 kV. The 6.6, 11, 33, 66 and 132 kV classes are named.
What cooling and voltage regulation options are provided?
Cooling ranges from natural to directed oil circulation by pumps and forced air, with water heat exchangers if required. Regulation is by an OLTC, externally mounted or built into the tank, or by an off-circuit tap changer.
To which specifications and up to what voltage are the transformers tested?
Manufacture follows ENATS, IEC, ANSI, Shell DEP, Aramco and railway standards. Routine and type tests are performed up to 170 kV, including impulse, temperature rise, SFRA and partial discharge measurement.
