SPRECON-EDIR — directional earth fault and short-circuit indicator for MV networks
SPRECON-EDIR is a directional earth fault and short-circuit indicator for continuous monitoring of 10–35 kV MV networks. It works in compensated, isolated and solidly earthed networks and applies several fault localization methods at the same time. The function is available as a separate panel-mounted device and as a software module in SPRECON-E-P DS6 and DD6 devices.

Description
The indicator is installed at distribution substations, sectionalizing points and digital transformer substations so that the dispatcher can quickly find the faulted section of a line. The device analyzes several different methods of determining the direction and location of an earth fault at the same time. The results of individual methods can be combined with priorities into one final message, and localization becomes more reliable than with a single method. Short circuits are detected by the same device.
The EDIR function exists in three forms. The separate SPRECON-EDIR device has a panel housing according to IEC 61554 measuring 96×48×90 mm (W×H×D). The same function is built in as a software module in the SPRECON-E-P DS6 series (combined overcurrent protection and control devices) and the SPRECON-E-P DD6 series (combined distance protection and control devices). The software is the same for all series and is based on SPRECON-EDIR, so the fault indication logic is identical in all versions. The separate device is convenient where feeder protection is already installed and is not planned to be replaced.
In combined SPRECON-E-P devices the EDIR function runs at a lower priority than the main protection function of the device. Control, earth fault indication and protection in these devices are consistently separated, so the functions do not influence one another. Protection, control and the fault indicator are then combined in one bay device.
Measuring circuits are connected through adapters. There is an adapter for low-power instrument transformers of 3.25/√3 V AC according to IEC 61869-10/11, and adapters for conventional secondary circuits of 100, 110, 115 and 120 V AC. The manufacturer positions the device equally for digital transformer substations and for medium voltage installations. It has the automation, network communication and IT security functions needed to operate as part of a digital network.
The indicator is designed for 10–35 kV networks, including those with arc suppression coils, where it is used together with the SPRECON-E-EREG regulator. Together with the SPRECON platform for control, protection and remote control and the SPRECON-V460 visualization, it forms part of a distribution network automation system. The manufacturer publishes a separate document, Advanced directional indication of earth faults and short circuits (SPRECON-EDIR).

Questions and answers
In networks with which neutral treatment does SPRECON-EDIR work?
In compensated, isolated and solidly earthed 10–35 kV MV networks. In networks with arc suppression coils it is used together with the SPRECON-E-EREG regulator.
Which versions of the EDIR function are available?
A separate device in a panel housing according to IEC 61554 measuring 96×48×90 mm, and a software module in SPRECON-E-P DS6 and DD6 devices. The software is the same in all versions.
Does EDIR affect the protection functions of a combined SPRECON-E-P device?
No, in SPRECON-E-P the EDIR function runs at a lower priority than the main protection. The control, fault indication and protection functions are separated and do not influence one another.
