SPRECON-E-P DQ6 — differential protection of transformers and motors

SPRECON-E-P DQ6 is a series of multifunctional devices with transformer differential protection as the main function. They are used as main protection of MV and HV transformers in all common neutral treatments, and with a thermal model and voltage protections also on MV motors. The devices combine protection, control and automation of the bay.

Object

Description

Besides phase current differential protection, the devices have earth fault differential protection with a characteristic restraint, zero sequence component elimination, blocking on energization by inrush current and on overexcitation (by the 5th harmonic). The overcurrent protections are multi-stage and are set separately for each winding. For medium voltage motors a thermal model and overvoltage and undervoltage protections are added.

Definite-time and inverse-time overcurrent protection (UMZ/AMZ) for phase and earth faults has three stages, with separate settings for each side. There are negative sequence protection and breaker failure protection, with two stages for each side. Overload protection of conductors and neutral transformers has 2 thermal models assigned per side. Current alarm stages (3× IL>meld, 3× IE>meld) are supplemented by a large number of alarm and trip stages, and settings are grouped into 4 switchable sets. Combinational and sequential logic is configured without programming through virtual binary inputs, and circuit breaker control is optional.

The series has versions SPRECON-E-P DQ..6-1 (a protection device with a control function) and SPRECON-E-P DQ..6-2 (a modular combined protection and control device). The device can also control up to 4 switching devices. In combined D..6-2 devices the protection and control parts are strictly separated, with separate data models, firmware, parameterization and passwords. Therefore updating parameters or firmware of the control part does not require re-testing of the protection or switching off the bay. The control part is configured in SPRECON-E Designer with the built-in DISPLAY EDITOR, and engineering relies on typification of identical bay types in the database.

A detachable flat panel with a large full-graphic LCD is built into the bay door. All operating actions and full protection setting on site are performed from it, with convenience comparable to the SPRECON-E COMM-3 program on a PC. Dimensions are 131/212/436 × 176 × 257 mm (W×H×D) including the connecting cable. The rated current of 1 or 5 A is selected by connection at the terminals. Interfaces are RS232, RS422/485, fiber optic and Ethernet 10/100 Mbit.

For differential protection of transformers with a remote end there is the SPRECON-E-P D3Qpi6 version with a communication channel. Applications are power transformers of 110/20 kV and 20/0.4 kV substations, transformers of power plants and industrial main step-down substations, and large MV motors.

Questions and answers

For which neutral treatments is SPRECON-E-P DQ6 suitable?

For all common neutral treatments at MV and HV levels. The device is used as main protection of transformers, for example 110/20 kV and 20/0.4 kV.

Can medium voltage motors be protected?

Yes, for MV motors there are a thermal model and overvoltage and undervoltage protections. Overcurrent protection is set separately for each side, 3 stages per side.

Is re-testing of the protection needed after updating the control part?

No, in combined D..6-2 devices the protection and control parts have separate data models, firmware, parameterization and passwords. Updating the control part does not require testing the protection or switching off the bay.
