SPRECON-E-EREG — arc suppression coil (Petersen coil) regulator
SPRECON-E-EREG is a regulator for arc suppression coils (Petersen coils) in medium voltage networks with a compensated neutral. It automatically tunes the coil in a healthy network in order to reduce damage at the fault location during an earth fault. The regulator is installed at 110/20 kV and 110/10 kV substations that feed cable and mixed 10–35 kV networks.
- Purpose
- automatic tuning of the arc suppression coil in compensated MV networks
- Method
- patented DiSpi method; detuning calculation without passing through the resonance point
- Regulation
- based on detuning and/or maximum permanent displacement voltage
- Functions
- multi-stage current injection, automatic phase selection, connection/disconnection of an external resistor

Description
Neutral treatment is among the main factors in the design of distribution networks. The most frequent type of fault statistically is a single-phase earth fault, and arc suppression in a compensated network maintains the power supply for the duration of such a fault. The arc suppression coil is tuned preventively, in the healthy network, and not after a fault occurs. The capacitive current of the network changes with every switching operation, so the coil tuning must be tracked continuously, and the regulator does this automatically.
The regulator reduces the number and duration of regulation processes and quickly detects detuning after switching operations. It determines the network parameters even in symmetrical networks with a very low neutral displacement voltage. Detuning shows how much the inductive current of the coil differs from the capacitive current of the network. Regulation is based on detuning and/or on the maximum permanent displacement voltage. The patented advanced DiSpi method improves response and tuning, and the current detuning is calculated without passing through the resonance point. In a symmetrical network the displacement voltage is low, so multi-stage current injection with automatic phase selection and connection and disconnection of an external resistor are provided for determining the parameters.
The regulator is part of the SPRECON platform, which gives several practical advantages. The security concept is consistent and meets the high requirements of critical infrastructure, with role-based access control RBAC, Syslog logging and digital certificates. Analysis covers statistical metrics and detailed records in COMTRADE format, so the behavior of the network during a fault can be analyzed after the event.
The regulator is fully digitally integrated into the substation control system. It is controlled remotely from the control center, including manual movement of the coil plunger. Service is performed through a web interface, and all measurements are flexibly processed by the control system together with other substation signals.
The regulator is complemented by the earth fault direction function SPRECON-EDIR and by SPRECON-E-P protections with intermittent fault handling. In this way a complete set for a compensated network is assembled on one platform, from coil tuning to locating the faulted feeder. The manufacturer publishes a description of the regulator as a separate document, E-Spulenregler (SPRECON-E-EREG). Applications are 110/20 kV and 110/10 kV substations with a compensated neutral, and cable and mixed 10–35 kV networks.
