SPRECON-E-C-AVR — automatic voltage regulator for transformers with OLTC
SPRECON-E-C-AVR is an automatic voltage regulator for transformers with an on-load tap changer (OLTC) switched by a motor drive. It is installed on 110/20 kV and 110/10 kV power transformers and on network transformers of distribution substations, including in parallel operation. The regulator is available as a stand-alone device or as a function in SPRECON-E-C and SPRECON-E-P devices.
- Purpose
- automatic control of transformers with OLTC and a motor drive
- Setpoints
- 5 independent voltage setpoints
- Parallel operation
- Master/Follower with monitoring of the circulating reactive current
- Protections
- step-wise supervision U< and U>, overcurrent blocking, drive and tap changer supervision

Description
The regulator controls the motor drive of the OLTC, which works on the step-by-step switching principle. One command changes the voltage by one tap. When the actual voltage deviates from the setpoint beyond the set limits, a Raise or Lower command is sent to the drive. The algorithm can be adapted to a large extent to the customer's requirements. Commands are issued step by step, so after each tap change the regulator evaluates the new voltage.
The regulator provides five independent voltage setpoints. They are activated from the local control panel or from the SPRECON control system. Several regulators can automatically work in parallel on the Master/Follower principle. During parallel operation the circulating reactive current between the transformers is monitored, so the tap changers do not drift apart in their tap positions.
Stable operation is maintained by several levels of supervision. Step-wise supervision of voltage decrease and increase (U< and U>) automatically returns the tap changer to the set voltage. The operation of the motor drive and the tap changer is monitored separately. Built-in overcurrent blocking does not allow tap changes during an overcurrent. For SPRECON devices the manufacturer publishes a separate document on reliability and availability (MTBF).
All settings are stored in programmable non-volatile FLASH memory and are retained after a power loss. No separate auxiliary supply is needed to keep the data. The regulator works as a stand-alone device or is connected to the substation control system via the station bus. The regulator function can also be implemented in SPRECON-E-C controllers and in SPRECON-E-P protection devices, without a separate hardware unit per transformer.
For process display the following are available: color changes, animation, text and numeric indicators, buttons, switches, bar graphs, pointer indicators, programmable ActiveX elements, libraries of switching device symbols and preconfigured power installation bays. The graphics are supplemented by freely configurable vector elements (circles, rectangles, lines), arbitrary fonts and colors and various 3D display settings. For full transformer automation the regulator function is built into the SPREBOX Transformator cabinet. There the regulation is supplemented by taking into account the direction of active power, dynamic adaptation of the regulation band to the load and counting of tap changes over a period. Typical sites are 110/20 kV and 110/10 kV power transformers, network transformers of distribution substations and groups of transformers in parallel operation.
