SCX — SCADA for hydropower, wind and solar power plants and their substations

SCX is a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for hydropower, wind and solar power plants and their substations. It collects and processes data in real time, interacts with process equipment, stores values and events locally and passes them to higher-level systems. The system has over 400 communication drivers for field devices and an operator interface per ISA-101.

Description

SCX belongs to the Vision line, tools for supervision and control of the power generation process. Each plant type has its own configuration. At hydropower plants SCX covers small hydropower plants, hydropower plants and grid-connected step-up substations together with the units. At wind farms it handles dispatching of wind turbines, integrates with the PPC controller, and covers the collector substation and the grid connection bay. At utility-scale solar plants the system sees inverters, trackers, the weather station, collector substation and connection bay, and the PPC is built into it directly.

The system consists of four parts. (1) Remote terminal units (RTU) and programmable logic controllers (PLC) are located at the plant, work with local processes, pass data to the SCADA server, receive commands from it and pass them to field devices; many RTUs also maintain a local database. (2) Servers initiate all exchange with RTUs and PLCs, collect and store data, build graphical interfaces, process alarms, build trends and reports, and pass information to other systems. (3) The communication network between field devices and the control center servers uses twisted pair, coaxial cable, fiber optic, satellite and HF radio channels, and includes Ethernet switches, GPS clocks and optical splitters. (4) Workstations show operators parameters in graphical form, issue warnings and alarms, and archive analog and discrete values.

The operator interface is high-performance, with fast navigation, ergonomic design, simplified graphics and alarm management, and interfaces are made per ISA-101. Screens are developed for the tasks of a specific operating service. Traffic and data storage are optimized by the EPM (Plant Manager) software tool. The architecture is flexible and scalable, and the system can be expanded over time. The design is protected in line with cybersecurity standards, and SCADA can also be accessed from mobile devices, from anywhere.

At renewable plants SCX is supplied in a common package with the power plant controller (PPC + SCADA). SCADA then serves as a tool for local and remote control, and the operator interface is intended for on-site control. The system is used at new and modernized hydropower plants and small hydropower plants, wind and solar plants, and at step-up and collector substations.

Questions and answers

Which facilities is SCX SCADA used for?

Small hydropower plants and hydropower plants with step-up substations, wind and solar plants with collector substations and connection bays. At solar plants the system covers inverters, trackers and the weather station.

How many communication drivers for field devices does the system have?

Over 400 drivers. Exchange runs through the plant RTUs and PLCs, and the network can use fiber optic, twisted pair, coaxial cable, satellite and HF radio channels.

How does SCX work together with the PPC power plant controller?

At renewable plants SCX is supplied as a PPC + SCADA package, and the PPC is integrated into the system directly. SCADA is used for local and remote control, and the operator interface is made per ISA-101.
