RTVAX POWER — excitation system, turbine governor and unit automation in one cabinet for small and medium hydropower plants
RTVAX POWER is a combined system that unites the RTX POWER excitation, the RVX POWER digital turbine governor and hydro unit automation in one cabinet. It controls frequency, active and reactive power and voltage, and operates the auxiliary subsystems of the unit. The system is used at new and modernized small and medium hydropower plants, and for excitation and starting of synchronous condensers.

Description
The manufacturer proposed combining excitation, turbine control and unit automation in 1999. The basis is the fully programmable and expandable platform already used by RTX POWER and RVX POWER. Unit subsystem automation logic is added to their functions and tools. The platform is flexible, so protective relays can be installed in the same cabinet, and if required the system is configured only for unit automation and frequency and power control. At small and medium hydropower plants this combination noticeably reduces costs. The automation logic can be extended to the equipment of a specific plant.
According to the manufacturer's list, RTVAX POWER controls bearings with their lubrication, cooling and oil rotor lift (jacking), and the braking system, from applying and releasing the brakes to fault monitoring. It operates upstream and downstream gates and spillways with oil pressure units and actuators, and the governor oil pressure unit with the 65S valve and the mechanical overspeed protection device. This also covers the butterfly valve, the bypass valve and penstock pressure equalization. The system closes and monitors the generator breaker (52).
Interfaces cover the substation, step-up transformer, VTs and CTs, electrical protection of the generator, transformer, busbars and lines, and automatic and manual synchronization. The system monitors the generator surge arrester cabinet and controls AC and DC auxiliary power (transformer, breakers, panels, lighting, air conditioning). It works with the charger, battery bank and emergency diesel generator set, with links to the dispatch center and the national operator, a vibration monitor and a digital disturbance recorder.
Excitation and turbine control functions, commissioning tools, recorders and protocols are the same as in RTX POWER and RVX POWER, namely IEEE 421.5, IEC 61850, DNP3.0, IEC 60870-5-101/104 and Modbus, with IRIG-B, NTP, PTP synchronization. Instead of three separate cabinets for excitation, turbine governor and automation, the plant gets one set with a common operator interface. Design, installation and commissioning are shortened, and the operator works with one interface instead of three. The system is installed at new plants and during modernization of existing units. It is used on units with Francis, Kaplan, Pelton and bulb turbines, and on synchronous condensers it controls excitation and starting.
