PSD04 and SiCEA01 — controlled switching controller and contact wear analyzer for HV circuit breakers

PSD04 and SiCEA01 are electronic devices for high-voltage circuit breakers at 72.5–1100 kV substations and belong to the secondary systems. The PSD04 controls the switching instant relative to the voltage or current waveform, and the SiCEA01 counts the electrical erosion of the contacts. Together they reduce overvoltages and inrush currents and allow the breaker to be maintained according to its actual condition.

Description

When capacitive and inductive loads are switched on or off in an HV network, current surges, switching overvoltages and transients occur. They stress equipment electrodynamically and dielectrically. The PSD04 issues the command to the breaker at a calculated moment relative to the network phase. A capacitive load is switched on near voltage zero, a transformer with account of residual flux, and the inrush current is noticeably lower. The new version builds on more than 25 years of experience in controlled switching of capacitor banks, reactors, transformers and uncompensated lines at voltages up to 1100 kV.

One device serves different loads. These are capacitor banks and filters, transformers with account of residual magnetic flux, shunt reactors, lines and cables. Single-phase and three-phase auto-reclosing are supported, and two sequences for different loads can be set for one breaker. The controller compensates the change in the breaker's own operating time linearly or by vector depending on temperature, control circuit voltage, and gas density and pressure. The current is measured by a feed-through sensor with three ranges, which is built into the circuit of the protective current transformer.

The PSD04 communicates with the substation automation system via IEC 61850 (MMS, remote commands) or DNP3, and Modbus is also available. The housing has three Ethernet ports and a 5-inch touch display. The built-in web server provides online configuration and viewing of waveforms, and the device keeps logs of switching, faults and measurements. Users are managed according to IEEE 1686, the firmware is signed and booting is secured.

The SiCEA01 takes breaking currents from the secondary circuits of protective CTs through an external 100 A/100 mA converter. It calculates the current integral for the three poles and compares it with reference values. The warning and alarm thresholds are set as a percentage of the permissible wear, and when exceeded, relays and LEDs operate. Communication is via Ethernet, and the operating temperature is −40…+85 °C.

The set is installed at substations where capacitor banks, reactors, transformers and long lines are switched. On 3AP series breakers both devices are offered as an option. For the maintenance service, SiCEA01 data replaces calendar-based inspection. A breaker that often interrupts large currents is taken for maintenance earlier, and a lightly loaded one runs longer.

Questions and answers

Which loads can the PSD04 switch in controlled mode?

Capacitor banks and filters, transformers with account of residual flux, shunt reactors, lines and cables. Application experience covers lines at voltages up to 1100 kV.

Which communication protocols with the substation automation system does the PSD04 support?

The main protocols are IEC 61850 with MMS exchange and DNP3, plus Modbus over RS485. There are 3 Ethernet ports for connection.

How does the SiCEA01 determine breaker contact wear?

The analyzer calculates the integral of breaking currents for the three poles and compares it with reference values. It has 2 thresholds and 3 relay outputs and operates at −40…+85 °C.
