PROTECTA TRIM/PoW — controlled switching device and inrush current limiter
TRIM/PoW is a controlled switching (point-on-wave) device for power transformers, shunt reactors and capacitor banks. It delays circuit breaker commands so that closing and opening fall at a favourable moment of the voltage waveform. Inrush currents, overvoltages and voltage dips are reduced, and integration into the substation automation system follows IEC 61850.
- Purpose

Description
TRIM/PoW is a device of the PROTECTA line for controlled switching (point-on-wave) of power transformers, shunt reactors and capacitor banks. The name of the TRIM function stands for TRansformer Inrush current Minimizer, that is, a minimiser of transformer magnetising inrush currents.
Energising transformers, capacitor banks and reactors always carries a risk of transient overvoltages and overcurrents. De-energising can also cause overvoltages and arc restrikes. Energising an unloaded transformer is often accompanied by magnetising inrush currents of very large amplitude. They damage the mechanical structure and the winding insulation and shorten the service life of the transformer.
The cause can be eliminated by choosing a favourable moment for closing and opening. Controlled switching determines this moment on the voltage waveform and delays the circuit breaker closing and opening commands accordingly. Different equipment requires different strategies because of differences in physical characteristics, so the PoW function has separate algorithms for controlled closing and opening of reactors, capacitors and power transformers.
According to the manufacturer, the TRIM/PoW limiter limits the inrush currents when power transformers are energised and prevents voltage dips at that stage. It synchronises the closing of the poles of the circuit breaker to which it is connected, in single-pole or three-pole design. Therefore the device is suitable for bays of transmission lines and cables, shunt reactors and capacitor banks.
Although the device belongs to the control equipment, it uses the same modular PROTECTA hardware platform and EuroCAP configuration tools as the protection terminals. Integration into the substation automation system follows IEC 61850. The platform has a CPU module with two 500 MHz processors that share the relay functions and the communication with the interface, a built-in 5-port Ethernet switch and a 320 × 240 colour TFT touch display, as well as a black-and-white 128 × 64 LCD. Data between the modules travel over a 16-bit high-speed parallel bus through a backplane. Each module is identified by its position in the case, and only the CPU module has a fixed position. Built-in self-diagnostics reduces the risk of device failure. The hardware platform is scalable for different applications, and modules can be placed in any slots except the CPU slot.
