PROTECTA DGEN/2, DGEN/3 — protection of generators and generator-transformer units

The multifunction DGEN/2 and DGEN/3 terminals of the PROTECTA line for protection and control of synchronous generators and power units with a unit transformer and an auxiliary transformer. Versions DGEN/2, 2T, 2TS, 3T and 3TS, the TS versions include an automatic synchroniser. The main protection is differential, supplemented with special generator protections.

Description

The DGEN/2 and DGEN/3 families (formerly designated DTRV/T(G) and DTRV/TGS) of the PROTECTA line are multifunction terminals for protection and control of synchronous generators and entire power units, including the step-up (unit) transformer and the auxiliary transformer. The DGEN/2 family covers three versions. DGEN/2 protects the rotating machine, DGEN/2T the generator and unit transformer, DGEN/2TS the same with an automatic synchroniser function. The digit in the designation corresponds to the number of differential protection restraint inputs, two for DGEN/2 and three for DGEN/3.

The DGEN/3 family is designed for units with three differential protection restraint inputs. DGEN/3T protects the generator, the unit transformer and the auxiliary transformer, DGEN/3TS adds automatic synchronisation and connection of the unit to the network. The main function is differential protection. It is supplemented with overcurrent protection, overvoltage and undervoltage protections, frequency protections and a set of special generator functions: protection against heating by negative-sequence currents under unbalance, voltage-controlled (voltage-restrained) overcurrent protection, protection against inadvertent energisation of a stationary machine, loss-of-excitation protection, 100 % stator earth fault protection, and rotor circuit earth fault protection. The terminal can also serve as backup protection for equipment located downstream in the scheme.

The devices are built on the modular PROTECTA platform with an 84TE or 42TE case, 3U high. There is a colour touch display with a mimic diagram, a web server, several setting groups, a disturbance recorder with up to 32 analogue and 64 binary channels and an event log of more than 10 000 events. Configuration is done with the free EuroCAP software. In the TS versions the automatic synchronisation is part of the terminal itself, and no separate device is needed. The protocols IEC 61850 Edition 2, IEC 60870-5-101/103/104, DNP3, Modbus, SPA are supported.

Applications: turbo- and hydro-generators of power plants, generators of small hydropower plants, gas engine and gas turbine installations, generator-transformer units of industrial CHP plants. For medium-power generators of 3–15 MW the manufacturer also offers the simpler S24/G terminal.
