+ SCADA — power plant controller for solar, wind, hybrid plants and BESS (PPC PV / WIND / HYBRID / BESS)

PPC + SCADA is a power plant controller for utility-scale solar and wind plants, hybrid plants and BESS energy storage systems. It coordinates the inverters, wind turbines, batteries, capacitor and reactor banks and plant transformers, and implements the grid code requirements at the point of connection. The controller is supplied together with a SCADA according to ISA-101 and supports IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, DNP3 and Modbus.

Description

A power plant controller is needed where many inverters or wind turbines must work on the grid as a single facility. According to the manufacturer's description, a PPC is mandatory at utility-scale renewable plants, that is, at facilities above 5 MW with a single owner. The controller coordinates generating and storage facilities, capacitor and reactor banks and plant transformers. Optionally it holds the permissible voltage level for the plant's own low- and medium-voltage loads.

There are four versions. PPC PV controls central or string solar inverters and other PPCs. PPC WIND coordinates wind turbines or other wind PPCs, including in a primary/secondary PPC topology when controllers from different manufacturers are already installed at the plant. PPC HYBRID combines different sources and storage into one cluster (solar + wind, hydro + floating PV, thermal or diesel generation + solar), limits export to the contracted power and relieves the grid by charging batteries. PPC BESS manages battery charge and discharge for price arbitrage and in modes that extend battery service life.

At the point of connection the controller regulates active power (constant or frequency-dependent), reactive power (constant or voltage-dependent), power factor (constant or dependent on active power) and voltage. If one module of the cluster under-delivers because of shading or a drop in wind, the PPC raises the output of the other modules. It compensates losses and local loads, sets priority for individual plants during curtailments, switches capacitor and reactor banks on and off, and controls the OLTC of the step-up transformer. Dynamic limiters for transformer overexcitation (ANSI 24), maximum power (ANSI 32), and minimum and maximum voltage (ANSI 27/59) keep the equipment from leaving its operating limits. The brochure also names applications such as black start, frequency and voltage regulation, transmission relief, peak shaving and energy arbitrage.

The operator interface and SCADA are built according to ISA-101. The SCADA works locally and remotely, and the HMI is intended for local control. Physical communication channels are Ethernet, single-mode or multimode fiber, and RS-485. Supported protocols are Modbus TCP/RTU, IEC 60870-5-101/104, IEC 61850, DNP3, OPC DA/UA, Profibus DP and EtherNet/IP, together with network functions VLAN (IEEE 802.1Q), QoS, RSTP (IEEE 802.1w) and MRP. The control cabinet is powered from 125 V DC, optionally from 100–240 V AC, can have a 24 V DC 5 A 7.2 Ah UPS, and is built to IP54 for installation under a canopy.
