ThyPPC, iCCI renewable power plant controllers (power regulation at the point of connection)

ThyPPC and iCCI controllers for renewable power plants regulate active and reactive power at the grid connection point. ThyPPC is required for sites above 6 MW under Terna requirements, and iCCI is installed on generation from 100 kW per CEI 0-16. The devices pass data to the DSO and TSO grid operators.

Description

Controllers for renewable generation sites are responsible for observability and power regulation at the grid connection point. ThyPPC (Power Plant Controller) regulates active and reactive power at the connection point of a renewable energy complex and makes it possible to take part in the dispatching services market. Under the requirements of the Italian system operator Terna, all power plants above 6 MW must be equipped with a system for control and regulation of active and reactive power at the connection point. New grid code requirements have been set for photovoltaic (A.68) and wind generation (A.17) and for energy storage (A.79).

ThyPPC measures electrical parameters at the HV supply point and at the MV point with a built-in network analyser and performs all the required regulation functions. Through an RTU interface the controller exchanges data with TSO control centres: it transmits states and measurements and receives commands and setpoints. Commands to inverters or data loggers distribute active and reactive power. ThyPPC is integrated into the substation SCADA through TCP/IP servers with Modbus, IEC 104, Profinet, CAN and OPC protocols.

A mandatory hardware interface with UPDM is provided for emergency reduction of the exported power, along with an HMI for parameter setting and monitoring. A separate Modbus TCP server is intended for the test instruments of certification bodies at the A.18 assessment stage.

iCCI System is a complete system under the new CEI 0-16 requirements and ARERA decision 385/2025/R/eel. They oblige the installation of a central plant controller (CCI) at all new and existing generation sites of 100 kW and above. The device is installed at the supply point, provides continuous monitoring on the DSO side and passes data to the TSO over a secure channel in accordance with Annexes O and T of CEI 0-16 and the cybersecurity standards IEC 62443-4-1, IEC 62443-4-2 and IEC 62351-100-3.

The system includes a wall-mounted cabinet with ready wiring, GPS with a 10 m antenna, an AC/DC converter, circuit breakers, terminals for field signals and ±24 V DC, as well as an iCCI controller with an IEC 61850 licence and a cybersecurity certificate for three years. The iCCI measures and transmits active and reactive power and voltage at the supply point, monitors the state of general and aggregate circuit breakers and modulates active power on an external DSO command. A CCI preparation kit (XMR-P relay, measurement module, ThySensor sensors, toroidal CT) and an XVS analyser for sites with V-Sensor sensors and split-core Rogowski coils are also offered.
