PCS-9641 / PCS-9631 — high-voltage motor and capacitor bank protection terminals
NR PCS-9641 and PCS-9631 protect, control and monitor two common types of medium-voltage feeders, high-voltage electric motors and shunt capacitor banks. Both are available in the basic version and in the new S generation and work in networks with any neutral mode. The terminals are used in 6–10 kV switchgear of power plants, substations and industrial plants.

Description
The PCS-9641 / PCS-9641S protect induction and synchronous motors of pumps, fans, compressors, mills and other auxiliary drives of power plants and industrial plants. The set of functions includes longitudinal motor differential protection (87M), directional and non-directional overcurrent protection, earth fault protection including sensitive earth fault protection, negative-sequence and phase loss protection, breaker failure protection, undercurrent and underpower protection, voltage and frequency protection, and reverse power and out-of-step protection (55) based on power factor.
The motor thermal model (49) is complemented by protection using RTD temperature sensors, supervision of starting time and stalled rotor (48), and restart inhibit (66) when the number of starts per interval exceeds the permitted value. The terminal stores 64 fault oscillograms and 8 motor start oscillograms with start reports, as well as 1024 events. The start reports show how the motor accelerates under load and help to set up the thermal model.
The PCS-9631 / PCS-9631S are designed for static capacitor banks. They provide four-stage overcurrent protection, RMS overcurrent protection accounting for harmonics up to the 11th, six-stage zero-sequence protection and negative-sequence protection. Internal faults of the bank are detected by current unbalance protection (60) with three groups of unbalance currents, as well as phase voltage differential protection (87V) and neutral voltage differential protection (87VN). There are two-stage undervoltage and overvoltage protections, undercurrent protection, thermal protection, breaker failure protection and up to four input channels for process protection signals with or without time delay. Current, voltage, power, energy, frequency and harmonics are measured.
The S version allows wall mounting indoors and outdoors or flush panel mounting and is configured in PCS-Studio. The terminals support IEC 61850-8-1 (MMS, GOOSE) and IEC 61850-9-2 (SV) for the station bus and process bus, IEC 60870-5-103 and Modbus over RS-485 and Ethernet, and the PCS-9631 also DNP3.0. Time synchronisation, trip circuit supervision and a front RJ45 port for setting are provided. Through GOOSE the devices exchange signals without control cables.
