Description

The controller combines control, protection, measurement, monitoring and communication. It is built on the UAPC platform with protection-relay-level speed, which has many installations. The control logic is flexibly configurable, and the communication boards and input-output modules are selected to suit the microgrid power. A large number of ports and protocols makes it possible to connect converters and inverters from different manufacturers.

When working with the grid, the controller limits the power flow at the point of common coupling (PCC) by controlling the output of storage and sources. To the external grid the microgrid becomes a controllable source or load. The controller provides ancillary services by regulating frequency and voltage on the dispatcher's commands. With the storage it smooths the output fluctuations of wind and solar plants and shaves load peaks according to a daily schedule from the dispatch center or one set locally.

In islanded mode, with a power deficit or surplus, the controller performs emergency regulation of frequency and voltage. To do this it controls the storage and quickly switches off loads and sources. Solar output is limited so that a diesel or gas engine generator does not run at an unacceptably low load. When the grid voltage disappears, the controller quickly detects the islanded state, opens the PCC breaker and switches the storage and sources to autonomous operation. Reconnection takes place with automatic synchronization, and the transition between modes happens without interrupting the supply to microgrid consumers. The owner gets a larger share of renewables and an economic benefit.

At the PCC the voltage, current, frequency, power, power factor and energy are measured, and the breaker position and the health of the CT and VT circuits are monitored. The memory holds 64 fault records, 64 waveforms and 1024 self-check and state change reports each. Overcurrent protection and voltage and frequency protections according to grid codes are built in.

The interfaces include up to six 10/100 Mbit/s Ethernet ports, one 1000 Mbit/s port, six RS-485/RS-232 and up to eight 100Base-FX optical ports for fast GOOSE exchange with converters. The supported protocols are IEC 60870-5-103/104, DNP3.0, Modbus in master and slave modes, and IEC 61850-8-1 GOOSE. Time is synchronized by IRIG-B, SNTP and IEEE 1588 v2.
