PCS-902 / PCS-902S — line distance protection terminal for transmission lines
The PCS-902 and its new generation PCS-902S are microprocessor-based distance protection terminals for overhead, cable and mixed transmission lines of all voltage classes. One device provides main and backup protection, auto-reclosing and control of the bay switching devices. The terminals are used on lines with series capacitor compensation, double-circuit, heavily loaded, short and long lines, and lines with weak infeed.

Description
The core of the protection is a five-zone (PCS-902) or six-zone (PCS-902S) distance protection against phase-to-phase and single-phase faults. Each zone has direction elements, load blocking and a patented power swing unblocking logic. In parallel, a fast protection based on the DPFC principle, that is, on the power frequency fault component (21D), operates. It clears faults in less than one cycle and does not respond to load fluctuations and power swings. The typical operating time of the PCS-902S distance protection according to the manufacturer's documentation is 12–15 ms.
For teleprotection there are separate zones and the schemes PUTT, POTT, blocking, unblocking and direct transfer trip DTT (85). The directional zero-sequence protection is supplemented with current reversal logic and a weak-end echo signal. Communication with the terminal at the adjacent substation runs over one or two optical channels G.703 or IEEE C37.94 at 64 kbit/s or 2 Mbit/s. Dedicated fiber and multiplexed channels, and single-mode and multi-mode lines, are supported.
The backup part includes overcurrent protection against phase-to-phase and earth faults with 4 to 6 stages, negative-sequence protection, and under- and overvoltage and frequency protection. For voltage protections an independent or inverse characteristic, phase or line voltage, and "1 out of 3" or "3 out of 3" logic can be selected. Also provided are breaker failure protection (50BF) for one or two breakers, stub protection, dead zone protection, protection against open-phase operation, out-of-step (78), conductor break (46BC), thermal overload and reverse power. Single-pole and three-pole auto-reclosing (79) with synchronism check (25) works in schemes with one or two breakers, including the one-and-a-half breaker scheme and the ring bus. The terminal controls the circuit breaker, disconnectors and earthing switches.
The enclosure houses a fault locator, an event recorder for up to 1024 events, a disturbance recorder in COMTRADE format, and supervision of the current and voltage transformer circuits and communication channels. For the substation automation system there are IEC 61850-8-1 (MMS, GOOSE), IEC 61850-9-2 (SV), DNP3.0 and IEC 60870-5-103 over Ethernet and RS-485 ports, and in the PCS-902S also Modbus, PRP/HSR redundancy and full compatibility with editions 1 and 2 of IEC 61850. The new generation performs PMU functions to IEEE C37.118 of classes P and M and meets the cybersecurity requirements of NERC CIP, IEC 62351, IEC 62443 and IEEE 1686. Time is synchronized by IRIG-B, SNTP, PPS or IEEE 1588. Configuration is done with the PCS-Explorer and PCS-Studio software.

Questions and answers
How many distance protection zones do the PCS-902 and PCS-902S have?
The PCS-902 has five zones and the PCS-902S six zones for phase-to-phase and earth faults. Both are supplemented with a fast DPFC protection (21D), which clears faults in less than one cycle.
What communication channels does the terminal support for teleprotection?
One or two optical channels to G.703 and IEEE C37.94 at 64 kbit/s or 2 Mbit/s. Teleprotection schemes PUTT, POTT, blocking, unblocking and direct transfer trip.
Is the PCS-902 suitable for IEC 61850 digital substations?
Yes, the terminal works with IEC 61850-8-1 (MMS, GOOSE) and IEC 61850-9-2 (SV) on the station bus and the process bus. The PCS-902S additionally has PRP/HSR redundancy and PMU functions to IEEE C37.118.
