Description

MELPRO relays detect faults and the faulted section of the network at high speed and disconnect it with minimum interruption of supply, limiting the outage zone. The task is wider than a single feeder, because a quickly localized fault does not develop into a system-wide one. After the disconnection, supply is restored to the healthy sections in the shortest possible time. The systems are used on lines and substations of transmission networks, in power plant switchgear and on generating units. For sensing and signal processing the manufacturer uses IT technologies and sensors.

The manufacturer builds immunity to false and unnecessary operations on three components. These are advanced protection algorithms, extensive self-diagnostics and a hardware platform with components selected under the company's internal certification system. The algorithms are verified by dynamic simulation on a physical model of the power system, where fault conditions are reproduced on real equipment. In this way the settings are verified before the relay is installed on site, and the behavior of the protection in complex conditions that are hard to predict by calculation is established.

The MELPRO-HA series is intended for generators and transformers of power plants. The MGP-H1A terminal provides generator protection, and the MGP-H2A terminal handles transformer differential protection. Both are compact and together cover the complete protection of a large generating unit, so the protection cabinets at the plant take up less space. These terminals are integrated into the plant's substation SAS in the same way as other IEDs.

The substation automation system (SAS) combines protection terminals and other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) under the international standard IEC 61850 and extends the monitoring and control functions. The software is built on the same principles of self-diagnostics and component selection as the relays. The operator works through a convenient human-machine interface with software interlocks against erroneous operations. The configuration data of all IEDs of the substation are maintained in an interactive tool, so changes in the scheme do not have to be entered manually in each terminal.

The Special Protection Scheme / Remedial Action Scheme prevents cascading outages during severe disturbances. It solves problems of dynamic stability, frequency and voltage, so transmission lines can be loaded up to their thermal limit. The online correction mode maintains the stability of a network with distributed sources when the share of renewables grows and operating conditions become less predictable.
